Music is said to soothe the savage beast. It does bring people together and it's why it has inspired songwriters like Bob Marley to write lyrics that say, "One good thing about music, when it aches you feel okay." But there are musicians who create great music that soothes their fans' emotions but they don't practice what their music preaches. In fact, there are musicians who have long, ongoing feuds with each other.

00:00While most beefs between musicians end up quickly squashed once the people involved
00:04realize how childish they're acting, some feuds spiral completely out of control and
00:09last forever.
00:10Hey, musicians are a sensitive lot, so headline-making rivalries are to be expected from time to
00:14time.
00:15Nobody can hear a f-----g thing you say!
00:19Sorry what?
00:20Now she won't repeat it.
00:22Crank your drama meter up to 11, because we're stage-diving into some of modern music's most
00:27petty squabbles.
00:28Eddie and Van Halen vs. Everybody in Van Halen
00:32Van Halen's got a lot of bad blood for a band whose most clever song is about ice cream.
00:36David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar regularly beef about who's the superior frontman.
00:41Roth claims Hagar isn't credible enough and never sold as many albums.
00:45Hagar claims Roth's voice isn't as good.
00:47Meanwhile, Eddie Van Halen's apparently pissed at everybody.
00:50"'Cause I was ready to, you know, it's like all those years of, we're right there.
00:55And I just said, if you ever speak to me like that again, you better be wearing a cup."
01:00And it seems like everybody's pissed at him, too.
01:02"'Cause there's so much anger that I don't even want to run into him.
01:04I used to always say, oh, you know, if I ran into him somewhere, he'd be like, oh, Eddie,
01:08how you doing?
01:09Big hugs and kisses.
01:10I don't think it'd be like that right now."
01:11Hagar blasted Eddie for claiming ex-bassist Michael Anthony couldn't play bass, by counterclaiming
01:16that Eddie could barely play guitar anymore and it was impossible to sing along with him.
01:20And then there's Roth, whom Eddie called an overgrown child he can't be friends with,
01:24and whom he only works with because the fans want it.
01:27Peace, love, and rock and roll.
01:28One out of three ain't bad, right?
01:31Noel Gallagher vs. Liam Gallagher
01:33Unless you're Cain and Abel, your sibling squabbles probably don't run as deep as they
01:37do for oases as Noel and Liam Gallagher.
01:39The two have apparently barely gotten along since childhood, making it a small miracle
01:44they formed a band in the first place.
01:45Within a few years, their infighting had overshadowed their music with incidents like Liam hitting
01:50Noel with a tambourine during a show.
01:52Liam accusing Noel of fathering a child outside marriage, Liam regularly leaving during shows
01:57only to be found somewhere drinking instead.
02:00You know, maybe we're starting to see who's the instigator here.
02:02We don't like each other, man.
02:04And by all accounts, Liam also started the 2009 blow-up that led to Noel quitting the
02:08band and the brothers finally splitting for good.
02:12Apparently Liam had canceled an important gig but managed to blame it on Noel.
02:15Tempers flared and Liam did the one thing you never do to a musician, he broke one of
02:19Noel's guitars.
02:21He did it, Noel quit that night, and the brothers have not been together since.
02:25Morrissey vs. Robert Smith
02:28Of all the things to fight about, you'd think best sad 80s singer guy would bottom out the
02:32list.
02:33And yet, Robert Smith of The Cure and Morrissey of The Smiths have been constantly swiping
02:37at one another since the 80s.
02:38It started when Morrissey was doing what he did best, insulting people.
02:42When asked during an interview who he'd shoot with one bullet, Robert Smith or some other
02:46guy, he answered,
02:47He didn't line them up, so that one bullet penetrated both simultaneously.
02:50Robert Smith is a whinge bag.
02:52Ooooooooh.
02:53Smith has also called Morrissey a
02:55"...precious, miserable bastard, all the things people think I am," and even quipped,
02:59"...if Morrissey says not to eat meat, then I'll eat meat.
03:02That's how much I hate Morrissey."
03:04The Smiths' singer, meanwhile, has said The Cure gives a new dimension to the word crap
03:08and made it perfectly clear that he has never liked them.
03:11Now, Morrissey doesn't like anybody or anything.
03:13Among the many things that Morrissey has said on record he actually hates are Elton John,
03:17George Michael, Madonna, Vic Reeves, Bob Geldof, Tony Wilson, meat-eaters.
03:22But still, with both sides publicly saying they'd happily put the other six feet under,
03:27don't expect a conciliatory hug-and-cry session anytime soon.
03:31Nas vs. Jay-Z
03:33The hip-hop beef has been embedded in the genre's marrow from the beginning, and has
03:37yielded some of its most thrilling moments.
03:39Nas vs. Jay-Z is still the gold standard.
03:42Even Jay's mom had to step in when things got too heated.
03:44Some tame references on a few late-90s cuts notwithstanding, it was Jay dissecting Nas'
03:49career with surgical precision on 2001's The Takeover that really set this lyrical deathmatch
03:54in motion.
03:55The ball was in Nas' court, and Nas took the ball, doused it in lighter fluid, and shot
03:59it out of a cannon.
04:00His ether dropped a few months later, and was so devastating that the word ether has
04:04become a shorthand term for having lyrically destroyed your rival on a track.
04:08Some fans thought it was over then and there, but Jay decided to double down and get reckless.
04:12He premiered Supa Ugly on Hot 97 FM, and explicitly referenced having hooked up with the mother
04:17of Nas' daughter.
04:19Jay's mother was so appalled that she urged her son to apologize, which he later did.
04:23Occasional shots were fired over the years until they performed onstage together during
04:27Jay's I Declare War concert in 2005, and publicly quashed this musician feud.
04:32They've even recorded a couple tracks together since, tossing their differences overboard
04:36and sailing that friendship all the way to the bank.
04:38How did the Jay-Z beef start?
04:40I'm really over that.
04:41I really don't like, you know, really wanna, I'm really over that, man, you know?"
04:46Mariah Carey vs. Jennifer Lopez
04:49The fact that this so-called feud is still being talked about is either a huge testament
04:52to our tendency to make a whole lot of noise over a whole heap of nothing where celebrities
04:56are concerned, or an even bigger testament to Mariah Carey's Olympian capacity for throwing
05:01shade.
05:02In 2000, a German TV network asked Carey for her opinion on a few of her contemporaries.
05:07She spoke very highly of Beyoncé, but when asked about J.Lo, she simply smiled and replied,
05:11"'Die kenn ich nicht.'"
05:13Ouch.
05:14Carey's four little words provided enough meme fodder to keep gossip-lovers warm and
05:17happy for many winters.
05:19"'There was the moment where you said, I don't know her.
05:22And then she said, I know her.'"
05:23"'That was so long ago.
05:24I can't believe people still make such a big deal out of it.'"
05:26J.Lo told Andy Cohen she harbored no ill will toward Carey in 2014, and hoped the feeling
05:31was mutual.
05:32"'I don't have a feud against her at all.
05:36I know from back in the day I read things that she said about me that were, you know,
05:41not the greatest.'"
05:42At the 2015 Billboard Music Awards, though, J.Lo was caught idly looking at her phone
05:47during Carey's performance.
05:49She claimed that it was just sneaky editing and bad timing.
05:52The whole thing wallowed in this sort of passive-aggressive nothingness until late 2017, when record label
05:57owner Irv Gotti revealed the two had actually been pitted against each other behind the
06:01scenes back in the early 2000s by one Tommy Mottola, a label exec in Carey's ex-husband.
06:06"'My, my, the plot like my gravy, thick as…'
06:12Kanye West vs. Taylor Swift
06:14This feud between superstars all started, of course, with that infamous "'Imma Let
06:18You Finish' interruption during Taylor's acceptance speech at the 2009 VMAs.
06:22"'Yo, Taylor, I'm really happy for you, I'mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the
06:28best videos of all time.'"
06:30What happened over the next eight-ish years was a noisy mishmash of more award show drama,
06:35lyrical potshots, and two- or three-planet-sized egos.
06:39Following the outburst, Kanye was slammed by everyone from fellow rapper Fitty Cint…
06:42"'I wish he would come take one of my awards so I could black as I. In front of everybody.'"
06:49…to then-President Barack Obama.
06:50"'The young lady seems like a perfectly nice person.
06:53She's getting her award.
06:54What's he doing up there?'
06:55"'Why would he do that?'
06:56"'He's a jackass.'"
06:58A brief apology to her followed, but then a year or so later, he slowly started backpedaling
07:02and trying to justify his actions.
07:05Even so, they seemed to have buried the hatchet by 2015, when Taylor presented Yeezy with
07:09the Vanguard Award at the VMAs that year.
07:11"'I'm really happy for you, and I'mma let you finish.
07:16But Kanye West has had one of the greatest careers of all time.'"
07:23But then Kanye dropped famous in 2016, reigniting the feud and turning more than a few heads
07:28with the line,
07:29"'I feel like me and Taylor Swift might still have sex.
07:31Why?
07:32I made that b---- famous.'"
07:33Taylor said she was shocked, but Kanye claimed to have gotten her blessing for the line beforehand.
07:38She denied this, and wild speculation and bickering was rife until Kim Kardashian set
07:42things straight on Snapchat, posting a partial recording of the phone conversation in which
07:46Taylor's blessing had, in fact, been given.
07:49Taylor shot back with some harsh words on Look What You Made Me Do in late 2017, so
07:53just when this will all end is anyone's guess.
