00:00The President of the United States had one last errand to run before heading to Super Bowl 59.
00:05The question is, though, did anybody really care?
00:09Taking to the skies on Air Force One prior to this year's Super Bowl,
00:12Donald Trump finally confirmed one of the most dramatic changes of his second presidency,
00:17renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
00:20We're flying right over it right now, so we thought this would be appropriate.
00:25The official papers, signed by Trump prior to the big game,
00:28also decreed February 9th, 2025 to be the first-ever Gulf of America Day.
00:34Trump wrote,
00:35I call upon public officials and all the people of the United States
00:38to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.
00:43Well, heading to a football game is certainly one way to kick the day off.
00:46The U.S. Coast Guard began using the term Gulf of America as soon as the ink had dried,
00:51marking the first time it was used in an official capacity.
00:54Yet, this was a change long in the making,
00:57and while many on social media were quick to provide their reactions,
01:00it seems that much of this news was lost in the excitement of the Super Bowl.
01:04Yes, Donald Trump's presence at the Super Bowl was more than enough to turn heads,
01:08but the bold move he made to enact his big name change on his way to New Orleans
01:12probably should have sparked a little more buzz.
01:14With many distracted by the sparkling lights of the Caesars Superdome,
01:18this drastic name change largely went under the radar,
01:21especially with the upset of the Eagles beating the Chiefs.
01:24Still, some sharp-eyed observers couldn't help but take notice
01:27when the White House posted on its official X account about the Gulf's name change.
01:31Notably, former presidential candidate Marianne Williamson simply responded with,
01:36"'Ugh.'"
01:37Another poster, meanwhile, responded by posting a photo of the Gulf with the title,
01:41"'Gulf of the least educated states.'"
01:44Elon Musk commemorated the big day by tweeting two American flag emojis,
01:48while Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene enthusiastically wished everyone,
01:52"'Happy Gulf of America Day!'
01:54While hardcore MAGA followers like Musk and Greene were clearly pumped to see the Gulf of Mexico get renamed,
02:00it's curious that Trump himself seems to have chosen this timing.
02:03Was he using the cover of the Super Bowl to push through an idea
02:06that's not turning out as popular as he would have liked?
02:09Is the decision to make Super Bowl Sunday an official day of celebration
02:12a means of burying something the president is actually quite proud of?
02:16Or is it just a tactical error on the president's part?
02:19Right now, it's hard to say for sure.
02:22Obviously, this wasn't the only major change Donald Trump promised to enact during his second presidency.
02:28Running on a campaign of quashing inflation and lowering everyday prices,
02:31Trump skated into office with a handful of other promises trailing behind him.
02:36One major commitment was to enforce a series of mass deportations, which are already underway.
02:41Right behind that were some more symbolic decrees,
02:44one of which is this recent name change and the new celebration of Gulf of America Day.
02:49The body of water that hugs the south-central coast of North and Central America
02:53has been called many things over the years,
02:55but Trump appears to be embarking on a crusade for American Manifest Destiny,
03:00designating February 9th as a day to remember.
03:03That said, the jury's still out about how Mexican officials feel about the switch.
03:08As Trump himself says,
03:09"...Actually, interestingly, I've never spoken to him about it."
03:12Online maps have already been updated to reflect the change,
03:16but aside from watching the Super Bowl,
03:18there's been no word on what type of events are to be held to commemorate this new day of celebration.
