Official launch of the three-year Derbyshire Makes cultural programme
Transcript
00:00My name's Claire Tymon and I'm the Creative Director for Derbyshire Makes.
00:05Derbyshire Makes is a three-year cultural programme about celebrating making in Derbyshire.
00:11So we are sharing Derbyshire's story through lots of different activities, making activities.
00:19Our history in Derbyshire is very much centred around the act of making through manufacturing and craft and design.
00:28And Derbyshire Makes is an opportunity for residents, young people, families, artists to get involved and use their making skills to help share Derbyshire's story.
00:40So tonight we're launching Derbyshire Makes at this wonderful new venue that is run by Sellers, a family-run jewellers in Derbyshire.
00:49We have some makers here to give demonstrations and to give people a taste of what to expect across the programme.
00:58We've got lots of people coming along who are already involved in the programme and we've also invited the funders, the investors in the programme.
01:10Hi, I'm Sue Reddish and I'm the lead artist on the Dare to Dream project, which is the mass participation element of Derbyshire Makes.
01:19Really exciting, ambitious project where we're really going to hope to work with as many people in Derbyshire as possible to get their making, maybe learning new skills or sharing their existing skills.
01:31And in the first year we want people to really fly the flag for Derbyshire by making small flags and banners.
01:37And I've just got examples here of things that people can make using repurposed and recycled fabric.
01:45So here's an embroidery of a bee on an old cotton napkin that I got from a charity shop.
01:51These are really simple techniques that people can use to make their own banners, cutting out letters in felt or painting it on.
01:58They're all really easy, accessible skills that we hope to encourage as many people as possible to get involved in the project.
02:06My name's Derek Hardenson, I'm Derek Hardenson Ceramics. I'm a potter, I'm based in Middleton by Worksworth in Derbyshire.
02:13I'm not originally from Derbyshire, as you can tell from my accent, but we've lived here for over a year.
02:18We just moved here last Christmas and absolutely love it. It's an amazing place.
02:23Can you tell me a bit about the work you do?
02:25So the work, my ceramics are all thrown on the wheel in my studio, which is at home.
02:31And they're all glazed with these glazes that I make myself, which turn out quite metallic.
02:36So they're mostly decorative objects, small bowls, vases, sculptures.
02:42Hi, I'm Lise Bennett, freelance artist from Ambergate in Derbyshire.
02:47Ambergate once had a thriving wire industry, so I've been using wire for the last four years to do my work.
02:54And today I'm making buckles, wire buckles, to celebrate Bolsover's connection with buckle making and spur baking.
03:03So I'll be doing this on the weekend when the festival's in Bolsover.
03:08Hi, my name's Cora Glasser and I'm an artist at Glass Bowl Studio.
03:12And I'm here today at the Derbyshire Makes launch to discuss the Make Room project,
03:17which is a roaming art programme that's going to be taking place across Derbyshire.
03:23And we are going to explore how people can reconnect with nature through making and thinking about sustainable practices
03:33and making sure that people can reimagine their relationship with nature
03:38and thinking about how we can do that within a constructed space,
03:43which is made by participants at different venues across the county.
03:49And through that, hopefully we can discuss how people's relationships with nature can be challenged
03:57or can be explored through a cultural programme of activities such as walks, workshops that take place in the constructed spaces.
04:05We're also testing out as well an action research model, looking at how we think about an alternative to a touring programme,
04:14actually creating spaces at each venue which will be a different iteration at each place.
04:20So hopefully you'll find out more on the website and be able to take part.
