00:00Anthony Mackie is finally getting his first solo movie as Captain America,
00:04but some people think that Brave New World isn't quite as brave as it could have been.
00:08This is what social media users who got an early look at the newest MCU film had to say about it.
00:13Holding off all reactions to Captain America, Brave New World until just two days before the
00:17film's theatrical release did not look like a show of confidence for Marvel Studios.
00:21With the social media embargo on the latest Captain America installment now lifted,
00:25it appears that worries about the film's quality were well-founded.
00:28While some of the early reactions to Brave New World are on the positive side,
00:32the general consensus on social media is that this is yet another MCU entry that
00:36fails to live up to the films of years gone by. Captain America, Brave New World continues Sam
00:41Wilson's story from the Disney Plus series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and also ties
00:45heavily into other Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. This seems to be part of the problem,
00:49as many people are surprised and annoyed about how often the film feels like an MCU history lesson.
00:54On Blue Sky, writer Mike Ryan posted,
00:56"[Captain America, Brave New World seems to only exist to wrap up loose ends through
01:00the Incredible Hulk and Eternals. In doing so, the plot is about as convoluted and dull
01:04as that all sounds." Editor Joey Mageson had a similar take, writing,
01:08"[It's a total wheel spinner, just clearing some loose ends from a few of the lesser
01:12Marvel efforts. Frankly, it should have been part of a season of television."
01:15Critic Robert Coyter, meanwhile, posted,
01:17"[Captain America, Brave New World is an overload of character, story, and action,
01:21not to mention a sequel to multiple projects, that is entirely weightless and forgettable."
01:26It seems like there's a lot of continuity to keep up with. According to critic Hoi Tran Bui,
01:31the film compensates by over-explaining everything. As she wrote,
01:34"[Looks like Marvel got that Netflix memo about characters having to say everything
01:38they do so an inattentive audience can keep up. Extreme Disney Plus series energy.]
01:42"'You're not Steve Rogers.' You're right. I'm not."
01:47Social media reviews weren't all bad, though. Journalist Jonathan Sim had one of the more
01:51positive reactions to Brave New World, posting,
01:54"[It's a gripping political thriller, offering enjoyable action and espionage with a phenomenal
01:58performance from Harrison Ford.] That said, Sim wasn't completely impressed. He continued,
02:03however, the final act underwhelms. Like The Wolverine, it gets silly in an otherwise serious
02:08film." Writer Matthew Jackson also had his issues with the film, but he made sure to
02:12praise one actor in particular. As he put it,
02:15"[Overstuffed, messy, often flatly composed,
02:18scenes show too much. But man, it really helps to have Harrison Ford on your side for these things.
02:22Not terrible, but not exactly good, either."
02:25Dave Gonzalez, co-author of the book MCU — The Reign of Marvel Studios,
02:29had similarly mixed thoughts, posting,
02:31"[I've seen a lot of bad movies, and this movie isn't bad. As a matter of fact,
02:35I like Final Red Hulk VFX. But it isn't exciting. It isn't thrilling."
02:39Gonzalez theorized that reshoots — rumored to have been carried out in response to a disastrous
02:43test screening — are the cause of many of the movie's problems. He specified that the director
02:47and star of the film did nothing wrong, explaining,
02:50"[I feel the worst for Julius Ona and Anthony Mackie,
02:52who deserve to have a movie that had more narrative and creative control over."
02:56"'I want you, Captain America, to help me rebuild the Avengers.'"
03:02Much more enthusiastic in her assessment was Nadia Martinez, aka Gotham Geek Girl,
03:07who said of Captain America Brave New World,
03:09"[It's an explosive, exciting, and powerful start to Avengers 2.0."
03:12Media personality Eric Davis was also impressed, writing,
03:16"[It excels in its Red Hulk and its many hand-to-hand or hand-to-shield fight sequences.
03:20This definitely feels like the beginning of the next chapter for Captain America,
03:24with the film laying groundwork for what's to come in the MCU later this year and beyond."
