00:00The new trailer for Marvel's Thunderbolts has arrived at the speed of sound,
00:04and while fans seem excited for the most part, there's one big question mark — the big bad.
00:09September 2024 was the last time fans got a look at Thunderbolts in a teaser trailer,
00:13so the glimpses they got of the movie during the Super Bowl on February 9,
00:172025, were more than welcome. A full, big-game trailer went online mere moments after,
00:22and the response on X was largely hopeful anticipation of the movie's release on May 2nd.
00:27One element the Marvel faithful are a little unsure about, though,
00:30is the movie's main antagonist, the Sentry, also known as the Void, who's played by Lewis Pullman.
00:36The original teaser gave fans a clear look at him, but the new trailer treats him as something
00:40more mysterious. He's only seen at a distance and from behind, with none of the trailer's
00:45shots showing his face. The Sentry is also one of the most powerful characters in Marvel comics.
00:50In some continuities, he's shown with the power to rip planets in half,
00:54so the trailer's emphasis on how the members of the Thunderbolts are
00:57not heroes, not super, not giving up, led to some curiosity as well. One fan mused on X,
01:03"'He can crush the T-bolts with no effort. Wonder how this will go.'"
01:06The Thunderbolts team isn't totally devoid of superpowers. Bucky, U.S. Agent,
01:11and Red Guardian are super soldiers, Taskmaster has photographic reflexes,
01:16Ghost can phase through objects, and Yelena Belova has all the Black
01:19Widow training Natasha Romanoff does. But they're definitely on a lower level than the Sentry.
01:25"'Wait, us?''
01:26"'Yeah, you. Why, you got someplace to be?''
01:28Others, however, were just excited to see such a powerhouse make his way to the MCU.
01:33One wrote,
01:33"'Looks so damn good. I cannot wait to see Sentry in action.
01:37We've been needing a top-tier villain.'"
01:39Another was even more breathlessly excited for the Sentry, writing that fans are
01:43"'winning' with this one."
01:44The Sentry's comics history is a convoluted one. He was created in the year 2000,
01:49but originally was presented as a long-lost creation from Marvel's Golden Age who everyone
01:54in the Marvel Universe had mysteriously forgotten. He had gained the powers of
01:58a million exploding suns from an attempt to recreate the serum that made Captain America.
02:03But there were problems. Within the Sentry was also the Void, a dark monster. Given the threat
02:08of the Void, Reed Richards and Doctor Strange came up with a plan to make everyone on Earth
02:13forget the Sentry. He eventually returned and went on to be both an ally and a villain to the
02:18Avengers. He reached what was arguably the height of his status as a supervillain in the 2009-2010
02:24Siege event, in which he leveled Asgard and killed multiple gods.
02:28Aside from the Sentry of it all, Marvel fans seem largely optimistic about what Thunderbolts
02:33will bring. One wrote on X,
02:35"'This looks way better than I ever could have hoped for. Cannot wait for this.'"
02:39Lots more said the new trailer helped them overcome initial skepticism about the movie.
02:43Another wrote,
02:44"'Sleeper movie of the year. I really think it's gonna blow people away.'"
02:48That said, a few fans did continue to express their displeasure about the way the trailer came
02:52out. One wrote, comparing it to an infamous DC film flop that, it was,
02:57"'Giving Suicide Squad.'"
02:59"'This could get messy.'"
03:00Others had problems with the tone of the trailer, saying it was too comedic or too similar to the
03:04feel of the Guardians of the Galaxy series. Others just flat-out asked if the movie is
03:09intended to be a comedy. We'll find out if it is on May 2nd.
03:14Here's what's next!
