00:00This vault in Svalbard is designed to protect your data from global disasters
00:09and it uses film reels to store that data.
00:13It is 35mm black and white film.
00:16Here we have about 24 frames, about a second of traditional cinema film
00:20but obviously we don't think of it in those terms.
00:22We think of it as about 50 megabytes of data.
00:24Don't worry, our history isn't being recorded in black and white.
00:30PICL software converts digital files into binary code
00:35which is then recorded on the film reels in a series of pixels, just like a QR code.
00:42So if you think about an analogue photo camera or a video camera,
00:45when you open the lens, when you press the shutter,
00:47it lets the light of the world come in and make an imprint onto the film.
00:51Here we're doing the same except we are sending the imprint that we want.
