00:00She has a renal fail kidney when she's 10 months and they shift her to dialysis.
00:08She make dialysis for five years and after that she got the kidney and her life was changed to better
00:17and she's active and playing and she's very well now.
00:21When I found her disease when she's in 10 months I feel very sad
00:28and I don't know what can I do because she's the second patient for me before I have another one.
00:37Her brother is 14 years old and he also got the kidney.
00:42I'm the donor before and I don't know what can I do for her.
00:47Then I fight every time to let her his life to improve and to get the kidney to change her life
00:59because I know how it's changed before when she's in dialysis and after dialysis.
01:05When she's in hemodialysis she's feeling so tired and she cannot move and she cannot walk
01:15and she cannot eat and drink whatever she wants.
01:18But now she can eat everything, she can drink a lot of water and she's hoping to go to school.
01:26Now she's in grade one in school and she's happy and too much active.
01:37In June 2013 my son Adam developed breathlessness
01:47and then we took him to his pediatrician here in Russell.
01:52He gave him the nebulization as they normally do for some respiratory problem
01:59and in the evening he came back and he was still having problems.
02:04That went on for one or two days and then Dr. Sam, he thought something is wrong seriously.
02:14He said we have to take him to a bigger hospital because it's not coming down.
02:20Then we took him to Sakar Hospital, the government hospital there.
02:26And it was the evening, I still remember, they started tests one after the other
02:31and the tubes started increasing all over his body because the urine was kind of not going
02:40and then to be sure his condition was really bad.
02:44Then they figured out his potassium levels were very high and he's turning out to be very acidotic.
02:54So then by night, his sugar levels are high, so all these negative signs started showing up
03:01and finally one doctor comes and says he might need dialysis.
03:06So I was thinking, are you sure doctor?
03:09I mean it was like a shock for us because being just nine months old,
03:13we have heard of dialysis for adults and big people.
03:18Then I asked doctors and they were all quite known to us and they were all very friendly.
03:24They did a very good job, wonderful job in the night, whole night.
03:28They were calling other doctors, other specialists, Sheikh Khalifa Abu Dhabi, Dubai Hospital
03:33just to figure out the best for Adam.
03:35And they came to conclusion he needs dialysis very soon.
03:40It started from there, you know, what do you say, kind of a battle for us
03:44and the challenges.
03:46We were pretty reluctant initially, you know, we thought we'll take him to India
03:54and we were kind of confused, you know, because it's a foreign land.
03:59But then now I can say it's not a foreign land because there I wouldn't have got such help and support.
04:06Many are their place, you know.
04:10I never thought the doctors also said, you know, there will be something working out.
04:14And slowly we had, we signed the consent and because he needed a general anesthesia at that age
04:20and it was very risky and thank God, you know, we were in safe hands of good doctors.
04:27One fine day in that ward, he was responding, you know, he was kind of a small smile.
04:35He felt that and that gave me, because somebody before that, they just prayed for him.
04:42So, you know, the divine power we could feel that.
04:45And that gave us a hope, no, it's not the end.
04:49Because he was totally not responding for 20 days, you know.
04:53Of course, the doctors were really, you know, giving their best, you know.
04:57And they did their best.
04:59And so I have all these good memories of Dubai and the hospital.
05:05Although it was kind of a challenging thing for us.
05:08And then there was the next challenge was to do this dialysis at home.
05:14So they trained us as parents.
05:17They said this is not the end.
05:19So we were thinking, okay, we'll finish the hospital stay and go back to normal life.
05:23But that is just the beginning.
05:25And we said, no, we will not do this.
05:27We are not going to do this.
05:28Because we've seen all this, you know.
05:30And they encouraged us, the doctors there.
05:32I remember Dr. Ashraf, Dr. Eva, Dr. Intazar.
05:37They even said you can do it as good as the nurses.
05:41You both can do it.
05:42I said, we don't know these machines.
05:45They just encouraged us in a way.
05:47I don't know from where we got, okay, then.
05:51And the machine is very expensive.
05:53They gave it for lease, the APD machine.
05:56The Dubai government was so generous, you know.
05:59Because if you want to buy a machine, it's 75,000 dirhams.
06:02And they gave it for lease.
06:04We used that for five years with dialysis at home.
06:08And by 2018, they say, you know, there's a limit, you know.
06:13It's a peritoneal dialysis.
06:15The peritoneum gets calcified and no more does the filtration.
06:18So they said now, and he started to develop some bone pain while he walks and runs.
06:24So he needs a transplant immediately or you have to switch over to hemodialysis.
06:28Which is, it's a hospital-based, you cannot do it at home.
06:31So 2018, August, they switched over.
06:35And we could see the drastic change also, you know.
06:38And even that, like as we said, no to the peritoneal dialysis.
06:43Even for hemodialysis, because everything was a bit scary for us in the evening.
06:46But then, you know, again, the doctors were so encouraging.
06:52They knew what is best for him.
06:54As parents, we have our own, you know, tension.
06:57See the tube, we thought the tube will be here.
06:59And they placed the tube in such a way, it was not very visible.
07:02So it's all, you know, expert hands.
07:04So for one year, he did hemodialysis.
07:07And July 13th, we came to know the kidney is ready for Adam.
07:13And between that and 2016, my wife, because my wife has the same blood group,
07:20O positive with Adam.
07:22So she was probably the candidate.
07:25And we went to Sheikh Ali Fahd Abu Dhabi.
07:27And we were getting things ready.
07:29But then my wife has a little bit, you know, pre-diabetic and a little bit hypertension
07:32because of the stress.
07:34So they advised not to give.
07:36So she was rejected kind of there.
07:38So then again, we had to wait two more years.
07:42But, you know, 2018, yeah, July, sorry, 2019, July 13th or 14th, yeah, 13th,
07:51we came to know that kidney is ready.
07:54And that family, we are very thankful that family who donated that
07:59in spite of their, you know, grief and agony
08:03because they lost their daughter.
08:07And then after the transplant, you know, transplant, as you know, again,
08:10stress and anxiety, but they did a wonderful job.
08:14You know, we were so fortunate to have that good team at Al-Jalila Hospital.
08:21Dr. Martin and Dr. Farhad, Dr. Hickey, David Hickey, Dr. Eva,
08:28and, you know, all these doctors, they, you know, they work in and out
08:34to make it real success.
08:36And by God's mercy and His grace, Adam is back to normal.
08:42He has never felt so comfortable.
08:45He's enjoying the life now.
08:47Thank God.
08:49Thank you, doctor, and all that you've done.
08:54And all that you've done.
08:56Oh, the family who gave me the kidney.
08:58Oh, the family who gave me...
09:00The kidney.
09:02The kidney.
09:07So you're crying with joy?
09:09Very good.
09:11You should be happy.
09:14Okay, and you'll be praying for all those children who are suffering?
09:19Tell them.
09:21You always pray, no?
