The sun was beating down on their backs, but actor Varun Dhawan and director Remo D’Souza were seemingly unaffected as they high-five each other looking mighty pleased. Dhawan, sporting a sleeveless white T-shirt, was about to be carted off in a golf cart from Bollywood Parks Dubai for a much-needed lunch break.

00:00Hi, this is Manjusha Radhakrishnan from Gulf News Tabloid and I'm here on this very hot
00:06afternoon.
00:07I think the temperature is at least 33 or 34 I would say and there's also director Remo
00:13who's hard at work, Remo D'Souza, right?
00:17And right now he just finished filming portions of Street Dancer 3.
00:22It's a closed door set and therefore we cannot go in.
00:25However there's Varun Dhawan and who else?
00:27Varun Dhawan, Nora Fateh, Dharmesh Raghav, Puneet, Sushant, a lot of people.
00:32So we just broke up for the lunch break and I was just hoping to catch up with Remo, hard
00:38at work.
00:39Tell us how your day went.
00:40Let's start with the very basics.
00:41The thing is that we don't have AC inside.
00:44It's not air conditioned.
00:45And you're all dancing.
00:46And we're all dancing.
00:47So it's like sweating inside.
00:48It's like you guys are having a sauna inside a steam bath.
00:52Brilliant.
00:53But I saw Varun Dhawan just breaking off.
00:55You have acted, I mean directed him before for ABCD.
00:59How has it been so far with him?
01:01What do you see as a big difference?
01:02Amazing.
01:03He's fantastic and we gel together and I know what he can do and he knows what I want.
01:12So it's a very nice combination of great talent and hard work.
01:19So that's how we go and we keep discussing our scenes, we keep rehearsing our scenes,
01:26we keep rehearsing our steps and all the stuff.
01:28Once we're on set, we're like one team and the whole team comes together and he's a very
01:34very hard working guy and too much energy he has.
01:38So I have to sometimes control it, I have to sometimes just say, just go for it.
01:42Really?
01:43Really now?
01:44So Race 3 did not work out the way you wanted but does that ever hold you because of a director?
01:50Are you more perhaps careful or do you analyse how that movie went, what did you do wrong
01:55or did you just start afresh?
01:57No, I just started afresh.
02:00And for Race 3, I'm not totally saying that I'm not happy or something like that.
02:07It was that kind of film, it had a certain amount of what do you call, Bollywoodish script.
02:16So it was larger than life and we had a larger than life actor and he was fantastic, my favourite.
02:23I think the UAE did quite well, UAE generally is more receptive as well and you're also
02:28here to judge Dansation, perhaps you can tell us about it, what should we do to catch your
02:35eye and score high marks with you?
02:37We are looking out for great talent and we know that there is huge amount of talent here
02:42also.
02:43So for me, to impress me, you just have to be yourself and give your best.
02:50So yeah, that's about it.
02:52And how do you rate Varun Dhawan as a dancer?
02:55I ask you this because we have seen him do so well in all the, you know, in any movie,
03:00he can do anything.
03:01What can you do different with an actor whom I feel, we have seen it all, we know how he
03:06moves, there's this familiar body language, how do you present a different version of
03:10him perhaps?
03:11See, as soon as he comes, steps into this world of mine, which is the street dancer
03:17world or maybe any city world, everyone is a dancer in this film.
03:23Every small character is a dancer, real dancer, it's not, I'm not casting an actor to do,
03:28they're all professional dancers.
03:30So automatically when Varun comes in, he transforms himself and the whole environment,
03:37the energy, you know, transforms in him to become a dancer and he behaves like a dancer
03:42on set and he walks, he talks and eats and everything like a dancer because he's surrounded
03:47by dancers, surrounded by a director who's a dancer, surrounded by all the actors who
03:52are dancers.
03:53He's ODing on dance.
03:54Yeah, so that's about it.
03:57What do you mean by street dancing?
03:59Somehow I feel it's a lot more casual.
04:01What is it?
04:02What is the genre like?
04:03Or is there a genre?
04:04Of course, there's a genre, there's a street culture, street dancers, when you say street
04:09dancer, there's a different world altogether, which are the dance form, the hip hop, the
04:17street style and everything has come from the streets.
04:22So that's why it's called street dancing.
04:25So this is about that only, the whole film is about how these people who dance and for
04:34them the street is their stage, their platform, but they perform there, they showcase their
04:41talent and it's the streets and people who see them and all this stuff, so that's how
04:47they present themselves on the streets.
04:53So yeah, this film is all about street dancers and there's a culture, there's always, there's
04:58a group, you know, in street dancers, I've gone through, in America, there's a huge amount
05:06of street culture, UK, Europe has and everything.
05:10So I keep seeing them and see them, they have these groups and they compete with each other
05:17on streets and all this stuff, so it's very interesting.
05:19It's not so open though, the starting, right?
05:22There's no stage, nothing, it's just street and that's how they perform themselves.
05:28Do you think Indians, we dance a lot, do we though lack that kind of uninhibited thing
05:32or we dance for weddings?
05:33For us, dance is such a, like we can dance for anything, right now we can dance if you
05:37wish, right?
05:38Yeah, yeah, we can.
05:41I think India, right now, we are on the top of the world.
05:46Really?
05:47Why do you say that?
05:48Because any dance form you say, we are doing better and we are doing best actually and
05:55Kings are the proof that we have done, we are the champions.
05:57Yeah, yeah, they impressed, suddenly we are on the map as well, the global map.
06:01The biggest dance reality show on earth and they have won it, so that proves that we are
06:08this thing.
06:09And then there is one more group who's got the golden buzzer and I think, you know, they've
06:16gone to some, one more reality show and I think they are also in the finals and maybe
06:21they'll also win it.
06:22Have you tried the roller coasters out there?
06:24There's a Krrish ride, the Shah Rukh Khan, have you tried them all, Lagaan, have you
06:29done it all?
06:30Yes, everything, all.
06:31Is that what you do in your downtime, when you are waiting for the sets to be prepared,
06:35is that what you guys do, all the actors?
06:37Yeah, it's amazing, I've done all the rides and it's a beautiful place, it's nice to have
06:43such kind of place here and it's great.
06:46And I've done all the rides.
06:47You've done all the rides?
06:48Yes.
06:49I'm very impressed.
06:50Which one would you recommend, out of sheer curiosity, especially since we are all Bollywood
06:53fans and we are not very happy.
06:55I think all the rides are amazing, but I think Lagaan is very interesting, because when you
07:02hear Lagaan and you think, what can you do, a ride on Lagaan, it's a cricket match, but
07:08you have to see it.
07:09That was Remo for you, as you said, he loves to go on roller coasters and his life has
07:14been nothing but a roller coaster and he's there to enjoy every moment of it.
07:18So glad that you're having such an adrenaline-charged ride.
