00:00Reading a book never goes out of style.
00:05And though the advent of Kindle and similar reading applications
00:08put millions of pieces of literature and reading materials
00:11available to one's fingertips,
00:13there will always be people who appreciate turning a leaf or page
00:17or going to a library to quietly immerse themselves.
00:20Much like when the Egyptians went gaga on the discovery of papyrus
00:24and the world turned crazy good upon Gutenberg's invention
00:27of the printing press, as our Gab Rumilde reports.
00:32In these changing times and the relentless pace of technology development,
00:35many of us still read books or even e-books.
00:38For Edgar Calabia-Samar, a writer and teacher,
00:41having access to the internet cannot be considered as anti-book reading.
00:45When I read a book, it reminds me that I don't need to make a step
00:52in the lives of these people until I reach the end.
00:55Or sometimes, even if I reach the end,
00:58my realization is that I cannot give a statement about their lives.
01:04The only thing I can give is an understanding of the lives of these people.
01:09And this is an important reminder that I don't need an opinion, judgment, or statement,
01:16but an opportunity to listen to the stories of others.
01:19Maybe this is the important thing that reading reminds us.
01:23For romance author Mina, the internet also gives people access to reading materials like books.
01:28She said Filipinos are hopeless romantics who like to read stories about love which abound online.
01:34It is not online content versus books.
01:38These stories start online.
01:40We are writing online.
01:42We are selling our books digitally.
01:44The internet is a way to actually get stories.
01:47And then, this is the next stage.
01:49Like, where do you get the book?
01:51According to National Book Development Board Executive Director Charisse Aquino-Tugade,
01:56most of the books in bookstores and libraries are English titled and published internationally
02:01with only a few locally titled and published books found on bookshelves.
02:05The reason being is it's difficult to find our own titles.
02:10It's difficult to find bookstores and libraries that carry our own.
02:14We wanted to give them a space.
02:16Tugade also found that 80% of the books purchased by the Department of Education
02:21over the long period are not locally written and published.
02:24Therefore, the Department of Education has set aside P925 million
02:29to purchase Philippine trade books and textbooks.
02:32One of the steps the NBDB has undertaken to encourage more locally authored and published literature
02:38inside and outside the country is to collaborate with various government agencies.
02:42They shifted policy so that Filipino books would have primacy.
02:47So, that new policy that came out last year, that's a very, very big win to move.
02:52Now, the NBDB, as we try to saturate our Philippine market, we're also going international.
03:02Also, the NBDB has many programs to make books cheaper and more affordable for the ordinary one,
03:09such as granting subsidies and tax incentives to those in the value chain.
03:13Likewise, the NBDB is scheduled to hold the 3rd Philippine Book Festival this March,
03:20which is the largest marketplace for published Filipino books in the country.
03:24Since 2023, the annual book festival has drawn over 75,000 attendees.
