00:00For an actor, I think the most amazing thing is when you get an opportunity like this.
00:09When you get opportunities, you're an actor, forget what I look like.
00:12What I look like, I mean, it's got nothing to do with me.
00:15I think what you kind of want as an actor is a part and a role which is going to be
00:20memorable, you know, a character which you can get lost into and escape from everything
00:25else and be just, that's your job, you know, and it's really an exciting job which allows
00:29you to do that, is to go and become this gangster who's a living gangster, he's a legend, he's
00:33got so many things about him and that responsibility to deliver that, I think is very, very crucial
00:43for that.
00:44If I think I look like this and went and played it, it would not have any impact.
00:48No, not at all, actually.
00:49I just met a guy who's not like that and honestly, I'll be really blunt about it.
00:54Actually, the funny thing is, when people figured that I was working with Arjun on this
00:58movie, you know, they were like, okay, you've sold out.
01:02You said all this about Bollywood and all that and actually, it's really funny because
01:07my greatest sort of, the most flattering thing I heard when I saw the trailer was like, man,
01:12this is something else.
01:13We've never seen anything like it.
01:14Good looks, alone, without presence, actually doesn't work so well.
01:18The presence is the part that's missing and I found he has a lot of that when he's just
01:22sitting in front of the camera without necessarily, he doesn't have to act, he can just play,
01:27get into that kind of mode and Gowli has that as well.
01:29He can be very quiet and have a lot of presence in the room and that's what I found similar
01:34between the two of them and I thought that's something that I really want to capitalize on.
01:37So, this is a film that I really wanted to break some of those stereotypes of what a
01:42performance is supposed to be, you know, and his performance is amazing because there's
01:47that presence and that heaviness.
01:48It was never strategic, it was timing, you know, it's a really funny thing because honestly,
01:52I remember doing interviews in 2012 and I was like, you know, Anupama Chopra and all
01:56these people say, you know, what if Katrina came and asked you, I want to do a movie with
01:59you, would you be excited?
02:00I was like, no, I'd be depressed because I don't want to make those movies.
02:04You can black it out, but I'm being honest and the fact is that's not what I want as
02:09a filmmaker.
02:10I don't want that as a filmmaker.
02:11Why is it about, always about, you know what I mean?
02:14So, I think but now nobody asks those questions anymore, right?
02:17Nobody even expects those films in the same manner anymore and actually the excitement
02:22for Daddy, I have to say, it's got to do with predominantly the fact that the old industry
02:27is collapsing.
02:28The old formulas are changing.
02:30People are really kind of burnt out by that stuff and that's why it's not worked.
02:33I mean, whether new things work, whether our film works, I don't know but there's an
02:37openness now that there's never has been.
02:39We have a black and white poster which is all over the city.
02:41We have a trailer that's pretty wild and does not look like a normal Bollywood movie that
02:45has like 9 million views.
02:47This is a sign of an audience that's evolving, I think.
02:50You know, that's my take on it.
02:52I think audiences have also got so much exposure to so much great content today, you know.
02:59No, it's not about get better content.
03:02Some stories work, some stories don't work.
03:04I think a story is engaging, story is made from your heart and it's out there.
03:09Whatever it is, the genre, it will work if it's got honesty in it.
03:13That's what nobody is, what 16 years or 17 years of being in this industry, what I've
03:18learnt is nobody is bigger than the film.
03:21Nobody.
03:22You know, not the director, not the actor, not the producer, nobody.
03:26Everybody is just, it's like one big puzzle.
03:28We are pieces of that puzzle.
03:30We have to put it together, you know.
03:32And then you see that picture and if you all have been honest about that, that honesty
03:38comes out and that's what people like and they get entertained with that.
