00:00Good day and welcome to the Gulf News update for Thursday, July 2nd. Here are the top stories
00:09at this hour. The captain of a Trans-Asia Airways aircraft
00:13mistakenly switched off the plane's only working engine seconds before it crashed in February,
00:18killing 43 people, Taiwan's Aviation Safety Council said. The council's report also showed
00:23that Captain Lao Jingzong, who was at the controls, had failed simulator training in
00:27May 2014, in part because he had insufficient knowledge of how to deal with an engine flame
00:33out on take-off. Lao pulled back the wrong side throttle, Lao 41 was heard to say on
00:38voice recording seconds before the crash. There appeared to be confusion in the cockpit
00:42as the two captains tried to regain control of the plane after the other engines lost
00:46power about three minutes into the doomed flight. Lao reduced the throttle on the working
00:51engine but did not appear to realise his mistake until it was too late.
00:55Egypt has vowed to rid its Sinai Peninsula of militants after major clashes with Daesh
01:00terrorists there killed more than 100 people. The attack was one of the largest coordinated
01:04assaults in the area yet by Daesh's local affiliate in Sinai.
01:09The chairman of the Eurogroup, Jeroen Disselblom, says the 19 nations using the euro currency
01:14have decided to break off talks on Greece's financial bailout until after Sunday's referendum.
01:20Greeks will vote yes or no Sunday on economic measures that creditors have proposed in exchange
01:24for loans.
01:26Rapper Flo Rida, the Macy's department store chain and football hall of famer Emmitt Smith
01:31are the latest to distance themselves from Donald Trump following his remarks about the
01:34Mexican immigrants. The Republican presidential hopefuls team is struggling to hold the Miss
01:40USA pageant together following defections by hosts, performers, judges and two television
01:44networks that were scheduled to broadcast the event on July 12. Trump owns the Miss
01:49USA and Miss Universe pageants.
01:52And finally, the weather today's high across the UAE will be 45 degrees Celsius dropping
01:56to 30 degrees at night.
