00:09the top stories at this hour. Indian police have detained the doctor behind botched mass
00:14sterilization surgeries that left 13 women dead as campaigners called for urgent reforms
00:19of the government's family planning program. The doctor, R.K. Gupta, carried out 83 operations
00:24in just five hours. The state government has banned the sale of six drugs used during the
00:29operations over concerns they were substandard. The Egyptian military said one of its navy
00:34vessels came under terrorist attack in the Mediterranean, leaving five servicemen injured
00:39and eight others missing at sea. This type of attack on Egyptian forces is unprecedented.
00:45Four boats used by the assailants were destroyed and 32 of the suspected militants were arrested.
00:50In a separate incident, a car bomb exploded near the Egyptian embassy in the Libyan capital
00:54Tripoli this morning, although there were no immediate reports of casualties. The Israeli
00:59regime has given preliminary approval to build an additional 200 Jews-only colony homes in
01:05occupied East Jerusalem, a step likely to heighten tensions in the city. The Israeli
01:10move came shortly before U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was to arrive in neighboring
01:15Jordan. He is expected to hold talks aimed at easing friction over repeated Israeli raids
01:19of al-Haram al-Sharif, of which Jordan is the formal custodian. Palestinian President
01:25Mahmoud Abbas is expected in Amman today to join the talks.
01:29Emirates airline has increased profits and carried more passengers in the six months
01:33leading to September 30 amid growing global political instability and fluctuating oil
01:38prices. Dubai's flagship carrier reported an 8.2 percent increase in net profits to
01:441.9 billion dirhams. Emirates said it suspended the highest number of routes in a year in
01:49response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa and safety fears in Iraq and Ukraine. The
01:55parent company, Emirates Group, recorded a 1.1 percent increase in half-year profits
01:59to 2.2 billion dirhams for the six months ending September 30 compared to a year earlier.
