00:00Good day and welcome to the Gulf News Update for Thursday, August the 14th.
00:08Here are the top stories at this hour.
00:10Thousands of protesters preparing to march on the Pakistani capital gathered in the eastern
00:15city of Lahore this morning, buoyed by a last-minute court order that a peaceful march could go
00:19ahead.
00:20The festive air at the home of the cricketer-turned-opposition politician Imran Khan was in stark contrast
00:25to the grim determination at the blockaded home of cleric Taharul Quadri.
00:29Another protest leader whose march has been banned.
00:32Both Khan and Quadri have called for the ouster of the government they condemn as corrupt,
00:36which came to power after a sweeping general election victory for the party of Prime Minister
00:40Nawaz Sharif last year.
00:42The Sharjah municipality has advised tenants that landlords cannot increase rents every
00:47year.
00:48Tenants should report to the municipality any unnecessary rent increases imposed by
00:51their landlords, an official said.
00:54According to the bylaw, new tenants are exempted from any cost adjustment for three years from
00:58the start of their tenancy contract.
01:00Once the three-year rent protection lapses, the landlord may start adjusting the rates,
01:05but in the succeeding year, if the tenant chooses to renew the contract, no rent increase
01:09is allowed.
01:10UA retailers expect double-digit sales growth in the lead-up to the new academic year in
01:14September as consumers buy must-have school-related items.
01:18Retailers have rolled out their promotions as they compete on both price and product
01:22selection.
01:23However, their focus is on product selection since competing on price can be challenging
01:27in a competitive market, according to Colin Beaton, managing director of Limelight Creative
01:32Services, a boutique retail strategy consultancy.
01:36In sport, Tiger Woods has ruled himself out of the contention for the next month's Riders
01:40Cup because of injury.
01:42The 38-year-old, former world number one, has been suffering from a niggling back problem.
01:46Woods had surgery in March and has been told not to play by doctors.
01:52And finally, the weather.
01:53It's high across the UA, with 41 degrees Celsius dropping to 32 at night.
01:58That's all for now.
