00:00I'm just grateful for this time to come back and get a second chance to do it again, but have fun
00:06Welcome to watch mojo and today
00:08We're looking at performers who disappear from the spotlight shortly after winning a major award
00:12Well, some of these stars continue to work the awards they won didn't lead to as many new opportunities as one might expect
00:17I'm no longer playing Maura. I'm going to miss her very much. I'm gonna miss that cast that I love so much
00:24Number 10 Paul Hogan Crocodile Dundee
00:27Australian Paul Hogan have been working in his home country since the early 70s
00:31But he came to international attention with the 1986 surprise blockbuster Crocodile Dundee
00:36New York City, Mr. Dundee home to 7 million people
00:40That's incredible. Imagine 7 million people all wanting to live together
00:47Yeah, New York must be the friendliest place on earth
00:50For his performance as Mick Crocodile Dundee Hogan won a Golden Globe Award for best actor motion picture musical or comedy
00:57Hogan went on to receive an Oscar nomination for co-writing the screenplay
01:00Give him your wallet
01:02What for?
01:03He's got a knife
01:07That's not a knife
01:11That's a knife
01:13Despite this breakthrough Hogan struggled to make lightning strike twice
01:16He'd star in two more Crocodile Dundee movies with diminishing returns at the box office
01:20As well as a handful of other comedies that fell short of his early success
01:24As the years went by Hogan became better known for his tax evasion troubles and throwbacks to his Golden Globe winning role
01:29Paul leads a pretty calm existence
01:32You know he's single, he pretty much keeps to himself
01:35He lives a simple life
01:39Oh hi there Shane
01:41Hi mate
01:42Yeah, I was just cleaning up around the house a little bit
01:50After decades in the industry Frances Bavier landed her career defining role as Aunt Bea on The Andy Griffith Show
01:56This is my Aunt Bea
01:58It's mighty nice to see you
02:00Now Andy before you go traipsing around the country on any manhunt you come along home and have dinner first
02:04Behind the scenes Bavier was known for clashing with the cast
02:07Feeling she was a serious actress above this sitcom role
02:10Nonetheless Bavier remained with the series throughout its eight seasons
02:13Towards the end of the show's run Bavier won her only primetime Emmy for her supporting performance
02:17I'm going now, I won't be long
02:19I'm just bringing Clara something over for supper
02:21You know that poor dear can hardly get around
02:24What's the matter with her anyway?
02:26Well she spilled some bacon grease behind the stove and she was afraid it would attract ants
02:30So she tried to lift the stove to clean it up and now she's walking crooked
02:35Although the industry had finally recognized Bavier her career was coming to a close
02:39She'd appear in the spinoff Mayberry RFD and the 1974 film Benji
02:44Bavier subsequently retreated to a quiet life until she died in 1989
02:48According to Griffith Bavier called him a few months before her passing apologizing for the animosity on set
02:53She said um I'm sorry we didn't get along better
02:59She said it was my fault
03:03Number 8 Catherine Ross Voyage of the Damned
03:06Catherine Ross is best known for playing Elaine Robinson in The Graduate
03:09Which scored her a Golden Globe for New Star of the Year actress
03:18Ross found herself back at the Globes almost a decade later
03:21For her supporting performance in the ensemble piece Voyage of the Damned
03:24She won the Globe which usually translates to an Oscar nomination
03:27I understand you waited for me
03:32Yes well uh I had to see you
03:36I'm flattered
03:38Ross surprisingly didn't make the lineup at the Academy Awards however
03:41The following years saw few opportunities for another shot at the gold
03:44Flops like 1978's The Swarm took a toll on Ross' film career
03:48Leading her to primarily star in obscure TV movies throughout the 80's
03:51By the 90's Ross was essentially retired
03:53Only occasionally resurfacing for small roles in films like Donnie Darko
03:57I met a new friend
03:59Real or imaginary?
04:01Imaginary
04:03Would you like to talk about this friend?
04:05Frank
04:07Frank? What did Frank say?
04:09He said to follow him
04:11Follow him? Where?
04:13Into the future
04:15Number 7 Sir Mix-a-Lot Baby Got Back
04:18Born Anthony L. Ray, Sir Mix-a-Lot released a couple of albums in the late 80's
04:22The rapper rocked the music world in the early 90's though
04:25With his controversial single Baby Got Back
04:27I like big butts and I cannot lie
04:29You other brothers can't deny
04:31Although some banned the tune, Sir Mix-a-Lot wasn't the only one who liked big butts
04:35The song sat atop the US Billboard Hot 100 for 5 weeks
04:38The song's popularity culminated with Sir Mix-a-Lot winning a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance
04:43Shake it, shake that healthy butt, baby got back
04:47Between 1994 and 2003, Sir Mix-a-Lot released 3 more albums
04:51Although nothing could replicate the success of Baby Got Back
04:53The song is still remembered as a cheeky throwback to 1992
04:56The same can be said about the man behind it
04:58A Grammy winner can still be a one-hit wonder
05:00It was surreal, I could not believe it
05:02And I never thought the song would go to number 1
05:04Especially because it was banned
05:06I'm like, well, that's probably it
05:08That's exactly the reason why it went number 1, it's an enduring legacy
05:10Number 6 Ivan Iyandl, The Search
05:13A former child star from Czechoslovakia
05:15Ivan Iyandl's acting career consisted of 5 films
05:181948's The Search was the only film from a US studio
05:21The boy's afraid, look at his eyes
05:23Has nobody spoken to him yet?
05:25We tried
05:26Perhaps the other boy could help us
05:27Taking place during World War II
05:29Iyandl plays a young concentration camp survivor
05:31Who was separated from his mother
05:33Although Iyandl didn't speak any English
05:35He brought authenticity to the role
05:37For his extraordinary performance
05:39Iyandl was honored with a special Golden Globe
05:41And the Academy Juvenile Award
05:43From the moment little Carol was separated from his mother
05:45His mind gradually went blank
05:47He has wandered far
05:49Come across many people
05:51Heard many languages
05:53He brings up a word here and there
05:55But he seldom speaks
05:57Unfortunately, he couldn't accept these accolades in person
06:00Due to travel restrictions at the time
06:02Despite these accomplishments
06:03Iyandl left acting and was never able to break back into film
06:06He passed away in 1987
06:08With his awards being entrusted to the Czech National Film Archive
06:11No surprise, you're doing alright
06:13He's got guts, not a son
06:15Good boy
06:17What's his name?
06:19What's his name? I don't know, I can't get a word out of him
06:21Number 5, Mercedes Ruhle, The Fisher King
06:23In less than a year, Mercedes Ruhle won a Tony
06:26For the Neil Simon play Lost in Yonkers
06:28And a Golden Globe for her performance
06:30As Nan Napolitano in The Fisher King
06:32You used to say that you liked that about me
06:34You used to say you liked that we
06:36Didn't have to think all the time
06:38That we could just be together
06:40And not think
06:42Ruhle went on to win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar
06:44For the latter
06:46Suggesting that her movie career was about to skyrocket
06:48However, director Terry Gilliam warned Ruhle
06:50That she was inclined to see fewer roles moving forward
06:52Well, I'll say there are a lot of roles for women
06:54But, right
06:56About, you know, maybe 9% of them are good roles
06:59Ruhle initially thought Gilliam's comment was kind of mean
07:01In time though, his premonition came true
07:03Ruhle found that a supporting acting Oscar
07:05Doesn't always translate to more work
07:07It just means studios will assume you want a higher paycheck
07:10While Ruhle is still acting
07:12She hasn't seen as many opportunities as she would have liked
07:14Does anybody have any allergies?
07:16And by this I mean really serious allergies
07:18Like life-threatening allergies
07:20Yeah
07:22I have asthma
07:24I don't like feet
07:26You have a foot allergy?
07:28Number 4, Milli Vanilli, Girl You Know It's True
07:30Following their debut studio album, All Or Nothing
07:32Milli Vanilli broke out with their sophomore album
07:34Girl You Know It's True
07:44The album's title track in particular
07:46Achieved early success
07:48Climbing to number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100
07:50When the R&B duo won the Grammy for
07:52Best New Artist in 1990
07:54It seemed like they were just getting fired up
08:08The Grammy would be the beginning of the end however
08:10Met with accusations of lip-syncing
08:12It was revealed that Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan
08:14Didn't contribute their vocals to the album
08:16In an unprecedented move
08:18Milli Vanilli was stripped of their Grammy win
08:32Attempts at a comeback have fallen flat
08:34With the Grammy scandal only bringing
08:36More attention to the past deceit
08:38Number 3, Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent
08:40Jeffrey Tambor was already
08:42A comedy legend by the time he won a
08:44Golden Globe and two Primetime Emmys
08:46For his performance as Maura Pfefferman
08:48In Transparent. Although Tambor is a
08:50Cisgender male, he made a plea for trans
08:52Characters to be exclusively played by trans
08:54Actors moving forward
09:06While Transparent would mark a turning point for representation
09:08It also saw a difficult transitional period
09:10In Tambor's career
09:24Amid winning various awards
09:26Tambor was met with accusations of toxic
09:28Behavior, two of his accusers being trans
09:30Women. Tambor was compelled to leave
09:32Transparent as many other creative teams
09:34Cut ties with him. The veteran actor had
09:36Already filmed a few other projects that were later
09:38Released, but he's been essentially retired
09:40Ever since
09:50Number 2, Harold
09:52Russell, The Best Years of Our Lives
09:54Harold Russell had lived the role of Homer
09:56Parrish, both losing their hands amid
09:58World War II
10:08Although Russell had
10:12Popped up in a documentary short, that was the
10:14Extent of his acting experience. Nevertheless
10:16William Wyler couldn't think of anybody
10:18More qualified to play Homer
10:20In The Best Years of Our Lives. His instincts
10:22Proved correct, as Russell received a
10:24Best Supporting Actor nomination
10:26Convinced that a non-actor would win this award
10:28The Academy granted Russell an honorary Oscar
10:30To their surprise, Russell also won in the
10:32Supporting category, making him the only
10:34Person to take home two Oscars for the same
10:36Performance. Although Russell appeared in two
10:38More movies during his lifetime, he otherwise
10:40Left showbiz in favor of helping fellow
10:42Veterans

11:13Number 1, Jennifer Holliday
11:15Dreamgirls. Jennifer Holliday gave what
11:17Might be the most show-stopping performance
11:19In Broadway history, as Effie White
11:21In the original cast of Dreamgirls
11:27Oh, it's my dress
11:29Witnessing Holliday sing
11:31And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going
11:33There was little question of who was winning
11:35The Tony. Indeed, Holliday not only ran away
11:37With the Tony for Best Performance by a
11:39Leading Actress in a Musical, but also a Grammy
11:41And a Drama Desk Award
11:43This is the most important night
11:45In my life, and I
11:47Want to thank God for giving me the gift
11:49And I want to thank God for giving me the
11:51Opportunity to share the gift with you
11:53One would expect Holliday to take the
11:55Entertainment industry by storm, but her
11:57Presence in film and television has been
11:59Minimal. Even on stage, Holliday has only
12:01Starred in three Broadway productions since
12:03Dreamgirls. This can be partially attributed
12:05To Holliday's history of physical and mental
12:07Health struggles. Like Effie though, Holliday
12:09Deserves another act
12:11I'm kind of enjoying a third act
12:13Of my career, mainly because of
12:15Social media, these young people have
12:17Rediscovered me, millennials, whatever
12:19They're called, I love them, generation
12:21Whatever generation they are
12:23They have rediscovered me
12:25And brought me out
