00:00Good day. Welcome to the Gulf News update for Sunday, March the 16th. Here are the top
00:09stories at this hour.
00:11Malaysian authorities today were investigating the pilots of a missing jetliner after it
00:15was established that whoever flew off with the Boeing 777 had intimate knowledge of the
00:20cockpit and knew how to avoid detection when navigating around Asia. Satellite data suggested
00:26the plane flew for at least seven hours and that it could have reached as far northwest
00:31as Kazakhstan or deep into the southern Indian Ocean. The new revelations make the hunt by
00:3612 nations involving more than 100 planes and ships one of the largest in aviation history.
00:43Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said Saturday someone severed communications with
00:47the ground and deliberately diverted Flight 370 back over the Malay Peninsula after it
00:53departed Kuala Lumpur for Beijing early on March 8. Dubai has announced two massive road
00:58projects providing easy access to International City and the Blue Waters Island, a new tourist
01:04attraction off the coast of Jumeirah Beach Residence. The projects were approved by His
01:08Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE
01:13and ruler of Dubai, and will cost 700 million dirhams. Thousands marched in western capitals
01:19yesterday to support the people of Syria, who entered the fourth year of a conflict
01:23that has left at least 146,000 dead and spawned the world's largest displaced population.
01:29Meanwhile, the head of Syria's main opposition alliance has said its international allies
01:34must honour what he said were pledges to supply heavy weapons. Ahmad Jarba of the National
01:39Coalition told the BBC that he was promised weapons if the Syrian government was at fault
01:43for the failure of recent peace talks. Egypt's interim government pledged decisive action
01:48and ordered heightened security Sunday after gunmen killed six soldiers at a Cairo checkpoint.
01:54The move came as a countdown began to presidential elections this spring.
01:59Sport and Ireland gave Brian O'Driscoll the perfect international send-off when they won
02:03the Six Nations Championship with a dramatic 22-20 victory over France last night. This
02:09was Ireland's second Six Nations title since 1985.
02:13And finally, weather. Today's high across the UAE will be 23 degrees Celsius, dropping
02:18to 20 degrees at night. That's all for now. Thanks for watching. And as always, you can
