00:00Formula is actually a hairdressing academy.
00:11The main course that we do is the IVQ, which is the International Vocational Qualification.
00:16So that's actually for people that have no experience at all in hairdressing.
00:20Everything in the business, so cutting, styling, colouring, hair up, straightening, perming,
00:25so everything is covered.
00:26It's a course that runs nine months.
00:28We have students of any age, so they can start at 16.
00:31We have a lot of people that, you know, they wanted to work freelance afterwards.
00:34Also people that, you know, went back to their country and actually worked there as a stylist.
00:38And then also people that moved in in the salons here.
00:41So also the opportunity is that when they finish the IVQ course, we also ask them if
00:46they want to stay in the academy, work here as junior stylists.
00:49We give our students a lot of opportunities to go and do fashion shows, photo shoots,
00:54so that they actually feel if they want to work in the salon industry or if they really
00:58want to go freelance.
00:59The most important to become a great hairdresser is to be very passionate.
01:03You have people that, you know, really want it but, you know, they just don't have it.
01:07So I think the combination of the passion, being creative and, you know, just have it
01:11in your hands, I think that's very important and that can make people really, really good
01:16stylists.
01:17It's very rewarding because when you teach the students, you get to see how you've taught
01:22them and how they progress and it's all your own doing, so it's amazing.
01:25We teach it, there's different modules, so I've got a minimum of 14 modules, so I'll
01:29start with consultation and I'll go to shampooing and I'll do blow drying and then I'll do cutting
01:35and colouring and it just keeps going on from there.
01:38They learn each unit and once they have learnt the theory, they then can practice on their
01:43clients and they have doll's heads as well, so they can practice on both.
01:46I just love improving the industry.
01:48Since joining the team, we've had like a 100% pass rate, which for me is like a huge achievement.
01:55Turning out these new hairdressers into the UAE is fantastic.
02:00You can get someone who wants it as a hobby, someone who wants to just learn it for personal
02:05knowledge or you do get students who are very passionate.
02:08You've got to love the job.
02:09I have to say, it's long hours, I'm always honest with my students, I always work in
02:13the public holidays.
02:14I've been learning this course for two months and I find it really exciting.
02:19I like it, you know, the whole image changes.
02:23If I do this hairstyle on this person, the person really changes to another person.
02:30The thing I like is the whole image changes.
02:32I like the choice and how people can be as creative as they want.
02:37For your friends I'm studying hair, what do they say?
02:40They're like, that's so cool, when are you doing my hair?
02:43And somehow I always have to do everyone's hair then.
02:45I'm just having a haircut, not changing style or anything and I thought then I'll come down
02:50here.
02:51I thought I'd just give it a try and also, you know, I've asked children or students
02:54as well, it's nice to give them, you know, they need clients and this is what I was told
02:58last time, they actually do need people to come, so after having been here once I thought
03:03then I'll come back.
03:04The teachers are there, you know, they support them, they're here, they're always checking
03:07everything they do, so you're not really risking anything, so why not support them?
03:11I'm here getting my hair done with my friend.
03:13I have an event to go to in the evening, so she said I'm going to do your hair and make-up for you.
03:17It's a thrilling experience and I completely trust her.
