00:00Locally produced organic vegetables and fruits are becoming popular in the UAE as consumers
00:15become more aware about the benefits of organic food.
00:18Abu Dhabi, for instance, many people are increasingly embracing the healthy lifestyle with a growing
00:22number of shops and restaurants selling organic food, particularly fruits and vegetables.
00:27Gulf News visited one of the organic farms in the capital to see the wide variety of
00:31organic vegetables, fruits and even animals that are now being produced locally.
00:35The 55 hectare organic farm produces 70 types of vegetables, fruits and herbs apart from
00:40fish, poultry, milk, honey, meat and many other livestock.
00:44It also has a two hectare greenhouse that yields a wide variety of organic produce during
00:48the summer.
00:49There are also certain herbs around the farm that help keep the insects away.
00:52The farm started in 2000 at a different location and was later relocated at a site around 15
00:57kilometers from Abu Dhabi International Airport.
01:00A prominent international agency certified it as an organic farm in 2007.
01:04Starting with only a handful of workers, the farm now employs 120 people including farm
01:09workers, cooks, administrative staff and truck drivers.
01:14Apart from the usual birth pain of setting up the organization and infrastructure to
01:17sustain the organic farm in the desert, the farm has not encountered major challenges
01:22along the way because of a strong demand for locally produced organic food in the market.
