00:00Sunderland City Council are urging residents and visitors of the city to stay alert after
00:05fake QR codes were placed on two City Council car park payment machines.
00:10One driver has fallen victim to accidentally transferring money to fraudsters instead of
00:14paying for parking.
00:15Similar scams have been reported by other local authorities and parking providers.
00:20The scam involves criminals placing fake QR code stickers next to the official pay-by-phone
00:25signs found on parking machines.
00:28The fake QR codes appear to offer a quick and easy way to pay for parking by scanning
00:33instead of the official payment methods.
00:35However, once scanned, the QR code directs victims to a fraudulent website that mimics
00:40a real parking payment portal.
00:42Unsuspected drivers who enter their bank in detail but the parking payment is not recorded.
00:47The scam causes banking information to be stolen and allows criminals to access accounts.
00:52One driver who parked on the seafront had £170 taken from their bank account.
00:57Thankfully their bank was able to reimburse the stolen money.
