00:00Live from Radio Row, Sports Grid's coverage of Super Bowl 59 continues.
00:05Joe Lisi alongside former LSU Tiger and NFL linebacker, Super Bowl champion as well, Kevin Minner.
00:12Kevin, how are you today?
00:13I'm good, I'm good, I'm good.
00:14Unbelievable atmosphere out here in the convention center.
00:17Super Bowl week doesn't get bigger than this.
00:19We know it's a marquee matchup, Kansas City and Philadelphia.
00:23Any thoughts about how the game might play out on Sunday?
00:26I'm hoping Philly's offensive line stays as special as it's been all season.
00:32If they can control the line of scrimmage the way they've been, I'm leaning towards Philly.
00:38Now, you also played special teams in terms of the Super Bowl where you won and you knocked off Pat Mahomes with Tampa Bay, right?
00:46Tom Brady, Pat Mahomes, that debate is going to obviously circulate if Pat Mahomes does win his third straight Super Bowl, fourth overall.
00:55Your thoughts about who the best quarterback is and should Mahomes be in the conversation with Brady?
01:02Pat is up there.
01:04I've seen him evolve.
01:05When we played him initially back in Tampa a few years back when I won the Super Bowl, obviously, he wasn't this calculated.
01:16When we played him, he got there off a backyard ball.
01:20Nowadays, he's going through progressions.
01:22He's making checks.
01:23He's a very impressive quarterback.
01:25Is he up there with Tom?
01:27I wouldn't put him there yet, but he's close.
01:29Now, what's interesting being a Bayou Bengal, right?
01:32Devin White had a fantastic game against Kansas City, right?
01:36Obviously, we talk about defensive performances.
01:39I could argue that he should have won the MVP of the game.
01:43What do you feel it would take for a defensive player to potentially hoist the hardware on Sunday?
01:50You have to play the best ball you've ever played.
01:54The man is good now.
01:55He understands your weaknesses, and he's exploiting them.
01:59He's kind of got a killer instinct like Tom.
02:02Remember what you did in training camp.
02:06Remember what you did in installs.
02:08Play your game.
02:10Don't get out of sorts.
02:12Play Simon Baldwin.
02:14The rest will play itself up.
02:16Linebacker, you played in the SEC, right?
02:19You know what it's like to come up in terms of run support, lay somebody out.
02:23Saquon Barkley is one tough cat to tackle.
02:27What is it in terms of his game that you see just that makes him potentially one of the best ever?
02:33His explosiveness, his elusiveness, his balance.
02:39It takes team tackling to bring him down.
02:43For him to be coupled with this line, it's a match made in heaven for a running game.
02:48Hopefully he can get it going this week.
02:52If you can't already tell, I'm pulling the Philly.
02:55I need him to win.
02:56I want him to win.
03:00I really have no dog in the fight, but I just want to see them play the ball that they've been playing all year.
03:06You beat them once, right?
03:08You beat them.
03:09Is there any smack talk from Kelsey?
03:12I need to know.
03:13Obviously there's smack talk.
03:14We know that.
03:15Do they jab a little bit more than most?
03:18Not more than most.
03:21He'll talk some.
03:23Obviously when Pat gets riled up, he'll talk a little bit too.
03:27They stayed fairly quiet when we played them.
03:31The ref situation.
03:32That's another thing or topic that's surrounding the game that a lot of fans feel.
03:37Granted that they've won games in terms of controversial calls.
03:41You could see last time, a couple of years ago, the hold or potential hold on Juju.
03:46That really allowed them to just run out the clock.
03:49Do you see that as well, or do you just see that they're a dominant team winning ball games any way they can?
03:55They're a good team.
03:58Some of my coaches always say, if you let the refs control the game, the result is the result.
04:06With Kansas City, they play four quarters.
04:12Regardless of how the refs are calling the game, if you play your game and you're doing what you're supposed to do, it shouldn't matter what they call.
04:22With that being said, in most cases, they have the refs on their side because they're playing ball the right way.
04:33I feel like fans see it as, he's getting all the calls or whatever.
04:39Honestly, if you take it out of their hands, what can the refs really do?
04:45Let's talk about what really matters to me.
04:48LSU Tiger football.
04:50You talk about Burrow, you talk about Daniels winning it.
04:54Where do you see Nussmeier heading into this year and this team overall?
04:59Brian Kelly came with some criticism, came with some tempered expectations.
05:07You win the SEC West in the first year.
05:10They're knocking off Alabama in dynamic fashion.
05:13Baton Rouge is rocking, baby.
05:16Then it's a slow regression.
05:19Can they crack through this year and make the college football playoff?
05:23I think so.
05:24I think Nussmeier, his first year starting.
05:27I think he had his growing pains.
05:30Obviously, I might be putting a lot on him, but I feel like you can possibly see him in the eyes when we watch this next year.
05:39It's a shot in the dark.
05:43I have a lot of confidence in his skill and Brian Kelly's coaching.
05:49Regardless of what people think, I do think he's a very well-rounded, good coach.
05:58He keeps guys focused.
06:01He's a program builder.
06:04It might be me being optimistic, but I see the Tigers making a resurgence this next year.
06:11It's a family and a fraternity.
06:14When we talk about the big four right now, you've got Jamal Chase, Justin Jefferson, and JJ.
06:22Those are the two veterans.
06:24Then you've got the two young guns, Malik Nabors and Brian Thomas.
06:28Talk to me about that.
06:30That fraternity of LSU wide receivers goes in the lineage.
06:34You could say when Zach Mettenberger was there with OBJ and Jarvis Landry, you could make the argument there were some great—
06:41Wendell Davis, back in the day, maybe didn't get enough touches.
06:45Where do you see those four?
06:48We already know Chase and Jefferson are on Hall of Fame caliber right now and that trajectory.
06:55Can you see the two young guns catching up to them?
06:58Yes, I just need the quarterback situation to be figured out in both those teams, whether it be Jacksonville or New York Giants.
07:07I think Trevor is a good quarterback, but I need the situation to get better as far as with this new coach coming in, which I kind of like.
07:20He was at Tampa last year.
07:22Hopefully that situation will take care of itself and we can get Brian the ball.
07:27He actually had a great rookie year, but it's about a body of work.
07:32Malik, I'm not sure what he drafted.
07:36I'm not sure what he's going to go with.
07:38Hopefully they get one of these two boys, Cam Ward or Shador.
07:42That's the one thing about a receiver.
07:47You're only as good as your quarterback.
07:49Absolutely. Great insight from Kevin Minner. We'll be right back.
