00:00It all started when my co-writer Aarish Vohra introduced me to Aditya Dhar.
00:12He wrote a script with me, which Aditya and Lokesh, his brothers, wanted to produce.
00:19This was their first production after Uri.
00:22Aditya sent me the script, I read it, I liked it a lot.
00:27Then I went and met them.
00:29I, Aarish, Aditya, Lokesh were all sitting and discussing.
00:34Our discussions were so effortless.
00:37It felt like a good team had come together to make the film.
00:42I had shown them some clips of my other film and show, which they liked.
00:49They said, Rishabh seems like the right guy to direct this.
00:53That's when the story of this film started.
00:56Right after that, the script was sent to Yami.
00:59Yami had loved it.
01:01I spoke to Yami for the first time.
01:03He said, Rishabh, I absolutely adore this script.
01:08I am nothing like this character, but I am going to give it my all.
01:12I want to give you the best Koel possible.
01:15Once this team was formed, we were thinking, who should we pair with Yami?
01:22In my discussions with Aditya, Aarish and Lokesh,
01:28Pratik Gandhi came up and next Pratik Gandhi was doing the film with us.
01:33We didn't even consider anyone else for the role.
01:36That's how the team of Doomdaam came together.
01:43If I may take the liberty of being a female actor on set,
01:48and an audience at the same time, to say that while you are right,
01:52sometimes a film gets success.
01:56By the way, it was a very good film, from which you named it.
01:59Kangana played that character beautifully.
02:03She did a good job and did a good business for the film.
02:08I am sure somewhere it encouraged five more writers or producers
02:12to write a stronger female character in their opinion.
02:26You have to watch the film to understand what we are trying to say.
02:29I think it is the key to a weak story.
02:37These are the elements to make a female character stand out.
02:44That's a discussion where you have to be very specific.
02:47I am someone who gets into logic.
02:49I will logically explain everything to you.
02:51Why this is different or why this is that.
02:53I am talking about my film.
02:55I am talking about this one.
02:57This film, when you watch it, you know.
03:00I am sure as writers or someone who is part of the industry,
03:06we encourage society unknowingly.
03:11Sometimes your writing is based on reality.
03:16Just because me as Yami, I don't use cuss words,
03:19I don't drink, I don't smoke.
03:21I am not judging anyone, I am not judging any girl.
03:23It is your personal choice.
03:25But that doesn't mean that doesn't happen.
03:26That doesn't mean that doesn't exist.
03:28Our idea is that we are not being any preachy.
03:31Koyal is not saying that girls should be like this.
03:35There are many girls like that.
03:37I have discussed with them.
03:39They are leading that kind of life where you don't want to hurt your parents.
03:44So you carry yourself in a certain way.
03:46And at the same time, you have a desire that I am a car racer.
03:53Or I drive a bike.
03:55Or I want to pursue something else professionally.
03:58So they lead that kind of life also.
04:01That is the reality.
04:03Now how does she have to be in humour?
04:05How does she have to be entertaining for you?
04:09And at the same time, as you said,
04:11I may not look like one of those 15 characters.
04:14So what is this?
04:15And that is where the genius of writing and direction comes alive.
04:20Where we select some ingredients for you,
04:22if you are saying, it is the same.
04:23But how to say a new thing.
04:25That is what I think Dhoom Dhaam is.
04:27And that is what we are trying to do.
04:29I have to mention that Koyal's character
04:31is of course a boisterous character.
04:33She is unafraid.
04:34She carries her heart on her sleeve.
04:38She is free.
04:39She can say whatever she wants.
04:41But I don't think at any point we have tried to create a character
04:45or pass any statement that this is cool.
04:48If a girl is smoking, she is cool.
04:49At the same time, if a girl isn't smoking,
04:51it's not like she is better.
04:54Everything is your choice.
04:56Koyal is like that.
04:57There is no value judgment on this.
05:00There is no value judgment.
05:01Koyal is like that.
05:02And unapologetically like that.
05:04And you won't even hear that cuss word in the film.
05:07You might feel it, but you won't hear it.
05:09So don't worry.
05:10Even if it is theatrical,
05:11nothing is used.
05:18I really enjoyed the fact that
05:20we have seen male actors do the same work for years.
05:25Your earlier question,
05:27that you could ask for female characters,
05:29but that stands true for male characters also.
05:32All the qualities you mentioned,
05:34we have seen them in male characters for years.
05:36But nobody ever asked,
05:37why are all male characters like that?
05:38Why has no one ever shown a scared male character?
05:40No, no.
05:41There has been a lot of debate about male characters,
05:45especially after Animal.
05:47If you have seen it.
05:48No, I am saying,
05:49because we have seen male actors in a way,
05:52we have been used to it since childhood,
05:54so we have never questioned it.
05:56Similarly, that helped me take a call
05:58that creating such a vulnerable male character
06:01is a unique opportunity.
06:03In which he is not taking a lead.
06:05He is taking a backseat.
06:07He is supporting the partner
06:09who is playing on a front foot.
06:11So the partner,
06:13whose wife is getting so angry,
06:15her husband is trying to
06:18handle the situation.
06:21And doing such a character,
06:22which is very realistic,
06:23very real life character,
06:25I guess that's an opportunity that I saw.
06:27And that was one of the reasons
06:28where I wanted to do this.
06:36It's not about issue,
06:37it's about respecting the process
06:39that I have as an artist.
06:41And recognising
06:42what work has been done for me till now.
06:45The films that I have worked on,
06:47or the characters that I have worked on,
06:50it was all script.
06:51I trust script the most.
06:54Of course,
06:55you have a certain trust in your team.
06:57Even if you are a stranger,
06:59you don't have to be friends.
07:01But a script brings everyone together,
07:03brings strangers together.
07:05We sit together,
07:06talk for hours,
07:07work for months.
07:09So on what basis?
07:10A script.
07:11So that script is very sacred for me.
07:13I can't even bypass that process.
07:16That script connects me
07:18with myself and my audience.
07:21Because when I read a script,
07:23I imagine myself as Yami the actor
07:26and Yami the audience.
07:33Script plays a major, major role.
07:38As an actor,
07:39I have to understand
07:40what you want me to do.
07:42How do I understand that?
07:44A lot of directors have this process.
07:46And I have worked with a lot of directors
07:48that way also.
07:49If I have worked with some director,
07:51or I have seen their work,
07:52and they have this process,
07:53I don't mind experimenting that way.
07:57So that's what I was saying.
07:59How do I understand
08:00what you want from me?
08:02The man has been making good films
08:04for so many years.
08:05So I can understand
08:06if an actor is comfortable
08:07surrendering to him
08:08even without a script.
08:09But then,
08:10I think it's circumstantial.
08:12Because my principle is
08:14that I have to understand
08:15what you want from me.
08:16How will you make me understand?
08:18Either through script,
08:19or through talks,
08:20or through narration.
08:21Something that helps me
08:22understand your vision.
08:23Where it's not like
08:24you have thought of something,
08:25and I have thought of something else.
08:27Then it is a disservice to the film.
08:29It's all about being convinced.
08:31Yeah, it's all about being convinced.
08:32Because I have to get convinced
08:33so that I can create your picture.
08:36Because it's in the director's mind.
08:39If I want to bring it to life,
08:42then it's very important
08:43that there is no loss in the transition.
08:52We shot this film in 2022.
08:55Oh, 2022.
08:56We shot it after Article 370.
08:59And it was released.
09:01And like Rishabh said,
09:03every film has its own journey,
09:04its own time.
09:06And I think I have to commend
09:10the writing.
09:11If it was written in 2014,
09:14but it is still relevant.
09:17And so many people have liked it.
09:19It has been greenlit
09:20as one of the leading
09:22platforms in the world.
09:24So something must have happened.
