If your recipe calls for softened butter, leave the microwave off. In this video, Ivy shows you a little trick she picked up in culinary school to quickly soften your butter! Sandwiched between two sheets of parchment paper, pound the stick of butter with a rolling pin or mallet to achieve the perfect consistency for baking!

00:00If you're in the middle of baking and realize that your ingredient list calls for softened butter
00:03and you've only got cold stuff in the fridge, do not put it in the microwave.
00:06Get yourself some parchment paper. Put one sheet down on the counter.
00:10Open up your cold butter, set the stick in the middle of the parchment paper.
00:13Get another piece of parchment paper and set it on top.
00:16Get yourself a rolling pin or a hammer or a meat mallet
00:19and all you're gonna do is take all of your frustrations of the day out on this butter.
00:23Peel off your parchment paper. Peel your pounded butter right on off.
00:31Look at this. Perfect softened butter consistency ready for baking.
00:36If you were to put that in the microwave, it would have hot spots all over it
00:39and the butter will start to melt in places.
00:41This is the preferred method to do it and the way I learned how to do it in culinary school.
00:45Easier, it gives you better results and honestly, way more fun.
