00:00Who are you?
00:00What have you done to my son?
00:02Ah!
00:07I'm Hela.
00:09Welcome to WatchMojo.
00:11And today, we're counting down our picks
00:14for the plot points in the Marvel cinematic universe
00:16that rattled the fan base.
00:18We'll be getting into spoilers, so consider this your warning.
00:22Sometimes family doesn't see eye to eye.
00:30Number 10, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch
00:32aren't mutants, various.
00:41Please, don't do this.
00:44What choice do we have?
00:46Integrating mutants into the MCU has been tricky.
00:49Many fans wanted to see the X-Men alongside the Avengers.
00:52And when the MCU introduced Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver,
00:55fans thought that this could be a possibility.
00:57Unfortunately, Wanda and Pietro had a bit of a bumpy start
01:01in this shared universe.
01:02Their status as mutants was scrapped,
01:04instead being referred to as miracles.
01:06Sooner or later, they will meet the twins.
01:12It's not the world of spies anymore,
01:14not even the world of heroes.
01:17This is the age of miracles, Doctor.
01:20Their family tree was also reimagined.
01:23Typically, Magneto is their father.
01:25But that wasn't the case here.
01:27Sure, Marvel couldn't lean into all of the X-Men goods
01:30back then.
01:30But ignoring who these characters were
01:32didn't make fans happy.
01:34Maybe the real miracle here is how popular Scarlet Witch became,
01:37despite all of the changes.
01:51Number 9, the CGI head, Thor, Love, and Thunder.
01:54Thor?
01:56Can you see me?
01:57Floating head alert.
01:58If you always wanted to see a floating
02:00head in a Thor movie, congratulations.
02:03This scene might have thrilled you.
02:05Unfortunately, the effect looks pretty unsettling.
02:08Heimdall's son, Axel, relays a message to Thor
02:12and the gang about gore.
02:13But we're willing to bet all words get lost in translation,
02:16because audiences could only focus on the horrendous CGI.
02:20A multi-million dollar movie shouldn't look like it
02:23belongs in the bargain bin.
02:25No offense to the VFX team, but this just was not it.
02:28There's even a cleaned up version on Disney+,
02:31but we're not sure it's much better.
02:33This laughably bad scene was one of several reasons
02:36this Thor entry is regarded as a weak point of the franchise.
02:39I need you to focus and hold out your hand.
02:42You're good.
02:43Now focus.
02:45Close your eyes.
02:48Number 8, Howard the Duck and Darcy Lewis have a kid.
02:51What if?
02:52That's happy hour.
02:53Want some half-priced nachos?
02:56OK, fine, duck.
02:57But this is not a date.
02:59What if a human woman and a duck had a child?
03:01There's a lot of fun stuff in the show, what if?
03:04But we're not sure who was wondering
03:06about this specific scenario.
03:07An episode where Darcy Lewis has a child with Howard the Duck
03:11is going to ruffle feathers no matter
03:13what way you want to slice it.
03:14This exact scenario plays out in the fourth episode
03:17of season 3, which sees the birth of Birdie.
03:23It's an absolutely bizarre storyline to do.
03:26And given the limitless premise of the show,
03:28a bit of a disappointment.
03:30Out of all the boundary-pushing scenarios they could have done,
03:33they go with this.
03:35Seriously, what the duck were they thinking?
03:39Oh!
03:40Did you do the bottle?
03:41You're supposed to do the bottle.
03:42No, the bottle's fine, Howard.
03:43It's way too hot.
03:44You can't give a bottle that hot.
03:45It's a blanket, dude.
03:46It's the coat.
03:47Oh, yeah, why'd we get a blanket?
03:48It's a blanket.
03:49It's a blanket.
03:50It's a blanket.
03:51It's a blanket.
03:51It's a blanket.
03:53Number seven, Kang the Conqueror is bested by Ant-Man.
03:56Ant-Man and the Wasp, Quantumania.
04:08This guy was supposed to be the next big bad of the MCU.
04:11That's kind of shocking considering
04:13he went out like a complete chump
04:15in the fight against Ant-Man.
04:17In Quantumania, Scott and Hope Van Dyne
04:19push Kang into a multiversal engine
04:21core, defeating him.
04:23It's a cool fight sequence, but a huge letdown, too.
04:37Fans didn't like the idea that this next level
04:39supervillain died that easy.
04:41Even though there were multiple other menacing variants
04:44of him running around, this was supposed to be the main Kang.
04:48If the MCU revisits Kang, he'll still
04:50be the guy who was taken down by the dude who talks to ants.
04:54Sorry, but that's a bummer.
04:56But he also said something bad was coming
04:59and that everyone would die if he didn't get out.
05:02Wait, so did I just kill everyone?
05:05Is everyone going to die because of me?
05:07Number six, Rhodea's a Skrull, Secret Invasion.
05:21The long-awaited Skrull invasion turned out to be a flop.
05:24But as the miniseries ran, speculation
05:27flew over which fan-favorite characters would
05:29be outed as shapeshifters.
05:30Eventually, Rhodea would be revealed as a Skrull.
05:33But many fans were displeased at the vague nature of the reveal.
05:37When exactly was Rhodea swapped out?
05:39Had he been a Skrull since Endgame?
05:41Did the real Rhodea even know that his friend Tony Stark died?
05:44This plot twist just didn't feel earned.
05:47He and other world officials are being kept in pods
05:51beneath the Skrull compound.
05:53You nuke that, you nuke them.
05:57Please tell me this isn't true.
05:59Are you listening to this insanity?
06:00Of course it isn't true.
06:01It seemed like the show needed a big reveal,
06:03and Rhodea squared that circle.
06:05Secret Invasion could have been a thrilling adaptation
06:08of an iconic comic storyline.
06:10But instead, we got a dull show that just failed to live up.
06:18Number five, the Ralph Boner debacle, WandaVision.
06:22Long lost bro get to squeeze his stinking sister to death
06:25or what?
06:25Ah!
06:28She recast Pietro?
06:30While this show might not have fully jumped the shark,
06:33it had its own divisive moments.
06:35The most commotion was caused when
06:36the identity of Evan Peters' mystery character was revealed.
06:40Fans initially believed that he might reprise his role
06:42as Quicksilver from the Fox universe.
06:44Could this mean we were going to get the X-Men
06:47in the MCU?
06:48Nope, sorry.
06:49It turned out that he wasn't Pietro, and it was all a trick.
06:52Peters was actually just playing some guy called Ralph,
06:55whose last name sounded like an immature reference.
06:58You're Ralph Boner?
07:03Boner.
07:05Fans didn't love how WandaVision stirred fan speculation
07:09and wasted an actor cameo all for a stupid gag.
07:12Hey, don't sweat it, sis.
07:14It's not like your dead husband can die twice.
07:18Number four, Star-Lord screws everything up.
07:21Avengers Infinity War.
07:23You gotta open this thing or it'll get off.
07:24I thought you'd be hard to catch.
07:25For the record, this was my plan.
07:28Got so strong now, huh?
07:29It was really hard to be a Star-Lord fan around 2018.
07:33He got a lot of blame for the blip.
07:35When Thanos is cornered by Iron Man's group of heroes,
07:38they come incredibly close to prying the Infinity
07:41Gauntlet from his grasp.
07:42But when Star-Lord discovers that Thanos killed Gamora,
07:45he attacks the Mad Titan.
07:47His rage during this moment allows Thanos to regain
07:50control and fight back.
07:51No, you do not!
07:53Whoa!
07:54Hey, stop!
07:55Stop!
07:56Stop!
07:57Hey, stop!
07:58Stop!
07:59It's coming!
08:00It's coming!
08:01It's coming!
08:02I got it!
08:03I got it!
08:04Many fans became split over this.
08:05Star-Lord's grief was perfectly understandable,
08:07but he also had a job to do.
08:09Some also believe that the way this scene happened
08:12was out of character for Quill.
08:13Either way, his reaction cost our heroes everything.
08:17Steady, Quill.
08:18Oh, man.
08:24Number three, the real way Fury lost his eye.
08:27Captain Marvel.
08:28So is it true that the Kree burned your eye out
08:32because you refused to give them the Tesseract?
08:35I will neither confirm nor deny the facts of that story.
08:39How Nick Fury ended up with his signature eye patch
08:42was a mystery fans were eager to see solved.
08:44But sometimes theories are more exciting
08:46than what we actually end up with.
08:48Near the end of Captain Marvel,
08:50a younger Nick Fury playfully holds up Goose,
08:53a dangerous alien that resembles a cat.
08:55But it turns out that this kitty's got claws.
08:58Goose was actually the one who caused Fury
09:00to lose sight in his left eye.
09:01Those bad guys still in there somewhere.
09:04Oh, mother!
09:06This wasn't exactly the satisfying payoff fans wanted.
09:09Captain America, the Winter Soldier,
09:10made it seem like Fury suffered a dramatic personal betrayal
09:13and, well, this wasn't that.
09:16Talk about a letdown.
09:17Last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye.
09:20Number two, Steve kisses Sharon.
09:23Captain America, Civil War.
09:25When I came out of the ice,
09:27thought everyone I had known was gone.
09:30When I found out she was alive,
09:34I was just lucky to have her.
09:35On the surface, there's nothing wrong
09:37with Captain America sharing a tender moment
09:39with Sharon Carter.
09:41But once you realize that she's the great niece
09:43of Peggy Carter, Steve's old flame from World War II,
09:46things get a little weird.
09:48Some fans didn't see a problem,
09:49but many were a little creeped out
09:51by Steve's decision to go from one woman
09:53in his family to another.
10:01It's also strange because this kiss happened
10:04not long after Peggy's funeral.
10:05And in retrospect, it's even odder post-Endgame,
10:09where Steve rewrites his history
10:10to go back and grow old with Peggy.
10:12The time travel shenanigans there only further the idea
10:15that the Steve-Sharon romance was doomed from the start.
10:18Plant yourself like a tree.
10:20Look them in the eye and say no.
10:23You move.

10:40Number one, The Mandarin Reveal, Iron Man 3.
10:43You know who I am.
10:46You don't know where I am.
10:49And you'll never see me coming.
10:55The Mandarin had the makings to be a formidable supervillain
10:57when he was introduced in Iron Man 3.
11:00He was menacing, mysterious, and murderous.
11:02Except halfway through the movie,
11:04we learned that this is all a ruse.
11:06The Mandarin we thought we were seeing
11:08was actually just a washed up actor named Trevor Slattery.
11:11I never thought people had been hurt.
11:13They lied to me.
11:15This is the Mandarin?
11:16I know, it's embarrassing.
11:18Hi Trevor, Trevor Slattery.
11:20While many in the fan base have actually come
11:22to appreciate Trevor over the years,
11:24he didn't get the warmest welcome initially.
11:26Fans dislike how the MCU made one
11:28of Iron Man's greatest villains a joke.
11:30While we'd get a version of the real Mandarin eventually,
11:34we still never got to see him face off against Tony Stark.
11:37A total fumble.
11:39He gave his figurehead the name of a chicken dish.
11:42And it worked.
11:44America was terrified of an orange.
11:48Is there a controversial MCU moment we missed?
11:51Spill the tea down in the comments below.
