The Conservatives have pledged to tighten immigration rules. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said the period before someone can apply for ILR should be extended from five to 10 years and people should then have to wait a further five years before seeking citizenship. 00:00At the moment people can come here on a work visa and once they've been here for five years
00:05they can apply for indefinite leave to remain which means they can stay here forever and
00:09become entitled to things like pensions, social housing and so on.
00:12Now we think that's too quick, we think the period should be doubled from five years to
00:16ten years but critically we're also saying today that people who come here to work but
00:22don't work, people who come here to work but end up claiming benefits or who end up on
00:27very low paid jobs which don't make a net contribution to the economy should not get
00:33indefinite leave to remain because it's not fair that people who haven't made a contribution
00:38end up able to stay here for good and in fact if somebody comes here saying they're going
00:43to work but then doesn't work then their work visa should be revoked and they should be
00:47required to leave.
00:48The principle here is that the British taxpayer should not be asked to subsidise recent arrivals.
00:54Only people who come here and make a contribution, a net contribution to our economy and to the
01:01society as a whole should be able to stay here on a permanent basis.
