Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp has dismissed the government's proposed powers to address illegal immigration as "laughable", claiming they will have no impact. He emphasised the importance of a strong deterrent, such as the Conservatives' Rwanda plan, in preventing small boat crossings in the English Channel.

00:00I don't think these are going to make any difference at all.
00:02The idea that dangerous people smuggling gangs
00:04are going to get put off by an order of the kind we're
00:07hearing about today is absolutely laughable.
00:10What we need is a deterrent to stop people crossing
00:12the channel in the first place.
00:14The National Crime Agency have said that.
00:16And yet this Labour government cancelled the Rwanda deterrent
00:19before it even started.
00:21The first plane had been due to take off on July the 24th.
00:24If that had been allowed to continue,
00:26I think we would have seen the numbers coming down
00:27dramatically.
00:28We saw a deterrent work in Australia
00:31in a very similar way about 10 years ago.
00:33But because they scrapped it, in fact,
00:35what we've seen under this Labour government is a 29%
00:39increase in illegal channel crossings
00:42since the general election compared to the same period
00:44last year.
00:45Labour is failing.
00:46They have lost control of our borders.
00:48And this measure will make no difference whatsoever.
