00:00We're joined on site right now at Radio Row by Jake laser. You watch him on Fox Sports. How are you? Thanks for stopping through
00:06Good appreciate you spending a few minutes. Danny's back in our DC studio here
00:10We were just talking about the fact so last night at the media party
00:13Some lady who's from around here brought like a van of creatures and I held me a van of creatures
00:18Well, like like things like me or like animals. Well, no like animals. Okay, and I held a big-ass alligator. Okay, that was very
00:25Do that
00:26Exactly when I when she handed it to me. She's like if he starts like going towards your head. Just don't panic
00:32So here's what I don't agree with you doing this, right?
00:34Because what's to say that alligator is a model citizen. You don't know maybe this
00:39Alligators, you know had a bad day. Maybe you got in fight with his wife. I won't be holding something that no
00:45No, I just no. No, absolutely. What about that? So the other sure not all alligators model citizens. That's very true
00:51What about the snake around the neck bit hell no
00:55I mean you fight giant humans. You're like, but I could talk to them. I
01:01Can't tell this bow constrictor. I'm topping out. I guess no tapping J. There's no tapping
01:08Absolutely, no, there's no there's listen if there's a 1% chance of error
01:14Why am I taking that one for that? Just no one's question. My man. No, I don't need to wrestle with any alligators or snakes
01:19I do enough with these freaking monsters. I wrestle. Yeah, you're fighting in the cage at Jake lasers with us on Grant
01:25Daniel, I'll take Lane Johnson and Randy couture every day over a snake and an alligator
01:29No, no problem. One of the big newsbreakers in the National Football League
01:32How about the cast that's been put together in DC new ownership with Josh Harris taking the team over from Dan Snyder?
01:39First year GM this year Adam Peters hit one home run after another Dan Quinn with his second opportunity so far making very good on that
01:46chance and
01:47they got the
01:49Quarterback salt for the first time in 30 years. How about what the what they've put together at all four of those pillars?
01:54First of all, let's start with the owner, right?
01:55Everything's cult starts a culture and I go and I talk now even like groups entrepreneur
02:00I always talk about cultures in the NFL and when cultures
02:04When they don't work over and over and over a lot of times these owners don't look at it inside themselves
02:08I would say Dan Snyder was a problem with culture the Jets Woody Johnson's a problem with that, right?
02:13In Cleveland you have that also the first time they won the Cleveland or Jimmy Haslam was the year that no one
02:19Except football was allowed in the building and COVID right and it's hard to tell a billionaire that they're the issue
02:25But I also saw it firsthand with Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis down here, New Orleans
02:30They taught mr. Benson how to be an owner and it like you just didn't know any better
02:34Right, but a lot of these I've told owner straight out
02:38I've had really stark
02:41Conversations with some of these owners of him and would you?
02:45trust
02:46Andy reader
02:48Sean McVeigh or Bill Belichick in the psych to run your business like no J. It's totally different
02:52I said, why do you think you could make a second round pick?
02:55Right, and it's hard to tell you billionaire that sometimes but they let people in their other business
03:01Do their job is not as much glory and the egos not, you know, this it's not the same ego, right?
03:08So here to have a guy like Joshua just comes in. He's like, hey, I'm hiring the right people and you guys do it
03:16It's the right thing and you're right like Adam Peters means learn with John Lynch
03:20Kid me fantastic and he's a relationship builder Dan Quinn. Somebody asked me here today
03:25What was the biggest my favorite hire of this coaching cycle?
03:29I said, I don't have one of this one, but I have one last time and Dan Quinn who all Dan does is
03:34Build cultures and win by the way, but like I think guys like a Dan
03:40Quinn a Dan Campbell these guys work better now than ever before
03:43Because in the past you could beat up on players, you know
03:46You can get after them you rip the hell out of them do the Belichick thing
03:49but nowadays when these guys are getting beat up a thousand times a second on Twitter and on Instagram on Facebook and this and
03:56That you can't do this. That's these guys anymore, you know, there needs to be
04:02You know, I talk how much I talk about mental health you gotta kind of look at it differently and
04:07How to help these guys navigate a scarier world than ever. No one does that better in this league than Dan Quinn J
04:13How's this office is gonna go for Washington?
04:15So normally first year of a build, you know
04:18You improve slightly maybe change the culture getting rid of some of the old guys that were part of the previous regime, etc
04:23Well, they did that and then they won 12 games
04:25I got the NFC title game like do you think that kind of changes the eye line for this group this offseason?
04:29I think you'll have free agents go man. I want to go play with them
04:32I want to go in with and here's the thing with Jane Daniels. I remember talking them early early early in the process
04:39and it was right after the combine even
04:42DQ and and and Peters like no no Jane. This is the guy and the reason why
04:48They said every single person you talk to
04:51It's been around him. All they do is talk about how hard he works and the blueprint for greatness
04:58It's all the hours you put in when no one's watching and look again, I've
05:03I've trained
05:05hundreds and hundreds of pro athletes in mixed martial arts
05:08Program that we've created in 2007 with our first guy being a long snapper from the Chiefs in a part-time DN
05:14Then Jared Allen, you know what I ripped off 15 sacks after we did this whole fight
05:19Mentality and really opened up his hips and got his hands more violent
05:24And over time again, we've started to see a change where guys
05:31Being famous ain't the same as being great and everyone's famous now. The only way you used to get
05:37Endorsements to make Pro Bowls. You had to be great right now. Everybody's famous because social media it's not the same work ethic
05:44So when you have a guy like Jaden Daniels, then you hear all he does is work
05:49You've been built for a long time with that guy
05:51I'm fascinated to get your perspective on something Jay Glazer's with us. You see him on Fox Sports
05:56He's one of the great reporters breaking down everything going on in the NFL the Liam Cohen
06:0224 hours as a reporter. No, he's not going to Jacksonville. He's coming back to Tampa now
06:08He's going back to Jacksonville. The teams don't even know what's going on
06:11The reporter can't possibly know what's going on the head coach accordingly in the head coach. It was gone
06:16What do you make?
06:18so there's other parts when he says I don't know if I want to put his business out here because he said he's too sick and
06:24There was
06:25Certain things. Yeah, so I don't want to put that's a personal thing with him
06:29It wasn't an excuse of this dog in his homework. No
06:33But I just mean the whole process like yeah, it's messy because I think these things aren't always linear and clean
06:39But man, it's a tough look from the outside. But look what happened when you guys last year
06:43They're supposed to be with Ben Johnson. Yeah, then don't that bullet and
06:48You guys should be thanking God that that happened because then all sudden there's there's Dan Quinn. I remember out of Peters being at the
06:55the senior role and me and John Lynch calling him to to
07:00screw the
07:02Scouting players that go higher dad Quinn go over there. He's there like and
07:08Yeah, sometimes you know the things that
07:11Don't happen. Nothing's a lot of things aren't just clean. You know this there's a lot a lot of backchannel stuff, but look I
07:18Haven't talked to
07:20The GM of the box when he said hey, we're gonna kind of tell Liam
07:23We're gonna make him the highest paid offensive coordinator NFL, but he has to pull his name out of that
07:27I said don't do that, dude
07:28That's like on shark tank when somebody gives you this offer they go, but you got to take it now
07:32You can't listen to the other Sharks. I don't do that man
07:34Just either like he stays I said even if you give him and you give him a bump for this year
07:38It's gonna be a head coach next year, right? You're not gonna get stuck with this huge thing
07:44But they want to do whatever they could do to try to make sure that
07:48They got him there and that shows the value of Liam. I I knew Liam in a different level. He lived with Sean McVeigh
07:54For a while and Sean lived by me and Sean is Sean's one of the first coaches. I really helped with mental health
07:59Dan Quinn is to
08:02And so it's for Dan with mental health. I was I'm not familiar. Oh, man went Dan. So first of all
08:08When Dan got fired
08:10from
08:12Falcons, it's the I've known Dan since he was with the 49ers in like 99 or something
08:17He's such a good dude and knew he was struggling. It's the first time he didn't have a team. I set up a zoom with 50 people
08:26combat vets athletes experts all this to
08:30Be there for him pick him up in
08:33What was his darkest time?
08:35but he also brought me in this year to talk to the entire Washington team about mental health and
08:40You know
08:41My message to these guys is look again
08:43I started training these guys in mixed martial arts and my whole thing of our unbreakable mindset was if you were hurt or tired
08:49You will never ever ever know and we got this from my partner in this Randy couture
08:53We're like our fighters can't take a stool in between rounds, right? Because we're not going to show it. We're not going to show
08:59We're not going to show it and you need that football and fighting
09:03But outside that cage
09:06outside those lines that same mindset all those dudes are brought up with gets people like me to
09:12freaking crop in a corner of my room and
09:14cry in the fetal position for no reason just because I have depression anxiety and bipolar and ADHD and
09:20And I fought this by myself for a long time and I say look
09:23I know we're not ingrained to talk to each other about it, but
09:27You guys take mental health show reactively where you got 15 strength coaches and trainers here for the physical part you only got
09:35you only have to have a
09:37Therapist and in the building three days a week courtesy BA
09:40That's it where everything starts in these six inches between your ears good and bad
09:44So it makes no sense. You guys probably don't think well, there's enough therapist
09:47There are you got 53 sitting in this room right next to you
09:49I think how much closer this will make you if you can lean into each other. They're gonna have brotherhood
09:54That's a fight to him. And again me by me open up about mental health. It's turned friends in a brother
10:00it's like I would never and like my best friends Michael Strand this dude drove me back in New York City every single day for
10:07Seven years cuz I'm enough money back and then I was making nine grand a year to go New York City Giant Stadium back
10:12every day I
10:14Never said a word to him when I had my meltdowns of pop biking in took Adderall drink
10:20I'd rather get arrested or get in trouble
10:24For
10:25Having outburst and have anybody know I had depression anxiety think how backwards that is, right?
10:31so first time I ever said anything was four years ago and
10:36First time ever 30 years. I said boy, I can't go out tonight man. The beast got out of the box and he's like
10:42Wanna talk about it. I was like, whoa
10:46Well, I do but not now because it kicked my ass like I was it when it when my depression anxiety get bad
10:52I feel it in my joints left side of my gut
10:55Behind my ribcage. It's hard
10:58I said, I just want to sleep this one off and he says you want me to come over and be there with you
11:03I was like
11:05Again, I didn't expect this. It's no and he says why have you never told me I said
11:09I don't make the rules up of this thing in the shame man
11:12But I was ashamed with you and he said to me probably most powerful thing. Anybody's ever said
11:17He said you think you're being a bother
11:20You're not you took away my chance to be your best friend for 30 years
11:24By not saying anything to me
11:26Think how powerful that is
11:28so that's why I go and tell these teams and then also like I describe it like I tell these coaches and I'm here to
11:34Talk about ADHD today
11:36Look I
11:38Was diagnosed with ADHD in 1989 and when you have ADHD
11:42It's and I'm sitting in something. I was told I had a learning disability. I'm a learning disability
11:46I just don't learn the way you teach. I can't sit in a three-hour lecture
11:49No matter what you do no matter how hard you punish me
11:53I am NOT capable and it's like you're drowning and my only way for breath of fresh air
11:58It's deficient. It's not an outburst. It's talk. It's whatever right and you think I want to get ground every week
12:03No, I told Washington coaches your players. You think they want to get fined for not being able to sit in this?
12:09No, but you got to figure out a way to coach these guys and be more understanding of this and we're talking about it now
12:14So not every square
12:16Like square pegs don't fit around round holes
12:19So I'm proud to be able to carry this torch and talk about it
12:21But I think how cool this is that I'm in a room with
12:24100 the baddest cats in the planet. I'm sitting there crying up there
12:27We're talking about and I've had a lot of players text me since on that team lean into each other
12:33It's beautiful. Like I said these
12:35These friendships have turned into brotherhoods because I've been able to talk about it and then by me opening up about it. I
12:41Finally found something that works my ADHD this drug called Calvary which in the past I've put on stimulants and with my
12:48level of depression anxiety in the bipolar
12:50Those stimulants for me made me really
12:54violent and bad and dark and I pushed away a lot of good people in my life, unfortunately, and I have a lot of regrets on
13:01that and
13:03To have this that but I'm like I will
13:06Because I talk about so much out something else comes out great. I'll try it. I'll do it
13:10I could pull myself out of this. No problem and
13:13Calvary is the first thing I should take it at night and it calms me and focuses me and it's
13:20Give me relief and something. I really never have relief from what's powerful
13:27Absolutely DC as you know with Dan Quinn, I've got a good thing going right now
13:32I appreciate all of the info and information on his background with DQ as well
