00:00Welcome back to inside the big game
00:01I am Gabriel Morenci and I'm sitting alongside a man who knows the thing or two about pitching and
00:06Playing in a big game six-time all-star three-time World Series champion
00:13NLCS MVP World Series co-MVP
00:17Mr. Kurt Schilling in the house with us in NOLA Kurt. Thanks for joining us. Thank you for having me
00:23How's New Orleans been treating you so far? Well, New Orleans is it's New Orleans, right?
00:27I mean, it's one of those things I always say, you know, a bad day golfing is still a good day a bad day
00:31No, you're still gonna have a good meal or three. Um, you know, I'm here main reason I'm here
00:36There's a building about a mile down the road called the National World War two museum that I was an original
00:42founding board member of
00:44And I'm trying to get the word out about that because this is such a massive week for New Orleans, you know
00:48The city 20 years ago was kind of Vegas. Yeah with the natural disasters and Katrina and everything. It's been
00:56Decimated and it's trying to get back on his feet and this is gonna be a monumental week for them
01:00I really do enjoy the the heritage and culture if you feel the history when you walk down the streets you feel the history
01:06When you walk through people think of Bourbon Street
01:09But walking through the French Quarter some of the side streets the old restaurants and the museums as well
01:14So you're encouraging people? Well, don't just go to Bourbon Street. Go check out the World War two
01:19I would tell you that I was it in Arnhem
01:21In the Netherlands for the 8th anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem in September of last year the 60th
01:27You're a war in history. World War two is my passion in life next to baseball
01:32This is the 25th anniversary of the World War two museums original opening. It'll be celebrated on June 6 of this year
01:39History to history people
01:40it's a no-brainer and allocate two more hours than you were thinking about if you're gonna go to people that have a
01:46Moderate to marginal interest I would tell them it's it's almost a bucket list visit when you're done
01:53You're like, oh my god, like I would have killed myself for missing. Yeah, you're glad you went
01:57Yeah, because this you know for in this day and age the arguments about the United States and its history, right?
02:04We have our bumps. We have our bruises. We have our bad moments
02:07but all of those things combined end up with what we have today and
02:13The this is a piece of history in a generation
02:16there's only
02:1766,000 World War two veterans left alive of the 16 million people that served and my grandfather was one of them
02:23Yep, my grandfather my mother's side was too. I met a hundred-year-old vet yesterday
02:27Who and people really do forget history Kurt you see well, you know people have short memory you and I were taught it
02:33Yeah, it stopped the education system stopped informing kids
02:37And so this generation through I think some of it no fault of their own wasn't taught
02:42And I think it's up to us and I think we have a responsibility to continue the legacy and to continue
02:49making people remember
02:51one of the reasons why there's good in the world today is because of what we did during the Second World War who we were
02:57And a lot of obviously tens of millions of other people, but this is a period and a generation
03:02We can never forget the Kurt Schilling with us. Oh Kurt here. We are sitting in the Media Center
03:08Right now and as I mentioned you've played in in championship series is you pitched in big games
03:14Do you get a rush being around this stuff still when you know you walk in you feel sort of it?
03:17You know
03:18There's a big game in the air and you can do do you feel?
03:21When you see the Eagle players and the chief players on TV is sort of know I kind of know what they're going for
03:26I know in many ways I can identify exactly with every I saw the buses coming in yesterday
03:31And I remember all of those things happening and and I gotta tell you
03:36This is so far removed from playing the game
03:39Yeah, that you know standing at Radio Row, and this is such a circus the NFL is so different right everything else right right?
03:46but as a player
03:48None of this equates to playing the game right this as a player. This was always like oh god. We got media day
03:54You know in in many ways, but as you get older you learn to appreciate this stuff
03:59I I do have a feel in my head
04:02I know some of the things that are going through the minds of these guys, and and I you know that I remember that very
04:08Vividly, I don't miss any of it. I've told
04:12People have asked me about it, and I said I've never missed it for a second never you don't miss the get nervous things
04:18I know because of all of the things and all of the work involved in getting to that point
04:23That's what made it were you like the night before a big game World Series game. Could you sleep in the hotel?
04:29So comfortably no problem. Yeah, I mean my wife might not be excited about telling the story, but my fourth child is a
04:37World Series accident and he's on our United States Marine so it turned out good
04:44No, you don't believe in the box
04:47Good, I'm ready. I said that last night to people I was talking to a lot of the players at media night
04:53The other night, and I was saying you know you can't overthink things what you do in a regular season
04:59You got to continue to do what you can't know what no you have to be better
05:03You have to get better that that I mean you know when I played I played against a lot of players
05:08April of September who were better than me October they couldn't sniff my jock. Yeah, you know difference
05:13You have to yes
05:14It's a different game, and if you can't accept that then you're not one of the good ones
05:18It is different you have to play different you have to elevate your game if you're not comfortable doing that
05:23You don't belong here. You've got to embrace the moment
05:26Embrace you know yep, just think I was born for this well Patrick Mahomes
05:30There's a reason he's going for a three-peat
05:32Not because he's bigger and faster than everybody is it part of the mentality of the pedigree of having a father that you know
05:39It was an athlete or you can't really teach that don't know no it's confident
05:44He's won 17 consecutive one-score games. You can't teach that no no
05:48The most athletic ability
05:51He's he's not the tallest fat and he's none of the things that he does as a quarterback
05:56Except play the position is above average if he was a pitcher
06:01Greg Maddux
06:03In a sense I I'm very low to compare anybody because Greg Maddux is the greatest pitcher that ever played the game
06:09Yeah, that you believe doing what he did in the generation. He did it
06:12What would you say cuz Maddux did it differently not with heat it doesn't matter?
06:15His numbers for the era that he pitched in were so much better than anybody that's ever played
06:21He was the best ever so wow if you're picking a pitcher you want to know that's gonna be
06:25Not the must-win game, but but if I'm taking a starting a pitching staff of careers
06:30He's my number one pick are you the number are you the guy you're picking?
06:34You couldn't beat me in October. I'm okay with that
06:37But April September he beat me a bunch well Kurt
06:40We got about a minute left before we get you out of here
06:43Hall of Fame, what's your feeling on this right now moving forward? I don't have one. I don't have one
06:49I mean you know the ballot is with the ballot, but you know I played with Hall of Famers
06:54I played with guys like Dale Murphy who should be in the Hall of Fame
06:59But I the game owes me nothing. I mean it gave the thing the game gave me forever
07:04I'll forever be indebted to it if it happens great if it doesn't I still have my rings
07:09And I still have the respect of the men I played with and played against
07:12I'm good and before we get you out of here. You do want to get back into the game
07:15I would love to be so much the sport. Yes. Yes, I I'm looking to do
07:19I would look I think I'm a decent color guy for the game
07:23I love teaching I love teaching I think I know pitching as well as anybody that's ever lived
07:28I think I can teach pitching as well as anybody that's ever lived
07:31And I have a love of the sport that transcends all of the things a lot of people get involved with it for Kurt
07:38Thanks a lot for a pleasure. Thank you. Enjoy. Thank you. Thank you
07:42You
