My visit to St Mary's Church in Bury St Edmunds was primarily driven by a fascination with Mary Tudor, Queen of France and sister of Henry VIII. I'd read about her life, her brief reign in France, and her subsequent, somewhat rebellious marriage to Charles Brandon, so standing at her grave felt like a tangible connection to a significant figure in Tudor history.
St Mary's itself is a magnificent church. Even without the royal connection, I would have been impressed. It's one of the largest parish churches I've seen, and the architecture is just stunning. I was particularly taken with the angel roof – the craftsmanship is incredible, and the sheer scale of it is breathtaking.
Finding Mary's grave was a moment of quiet reflection. It's not an ostentatious monument, just a simple stone inscribed with "Mary Queen of France 1533". In a way, the simplicity felt appropriate, especially considering the turbulent times she lived in and the fact that her tomb was moved here after the dissolution of the monasteries. I spent a few minutes there, thinking about her life – the pressures she faced, the choices she made, and the legacy she left behind.
Beyond Mary Tudor's grave, I explored the rest of the church, taking in the other monuments and architectural details. It's clear that St Mary's has a long and rich history, and every corner seems to tell a story.
My visit to St Mary's was a really rewarding experience. It brought history to life for me in a way that reading about it in books just can't. If you're interested in Tudor history, or simply appreciate beautiful architecture and historical places, I highly recommend a visit.
