ProFootballTalk.com's Mike Florio is a good friend of the morning show, and he joind Shan & RJ live at Radio Row in New Orleans to talk all about the Cowboys' hiring of Brian Schottenheimer as head coach, why the idea that Jerry would write any check to win another Super Bowl is a lie, and more.
Transcript
00:00Give us practice, give us your Schottenheimer reaction a week later, week and a half, whatever
00:21it's been.
00:22Have you come around to, okay, I can buy this a little more, or no?
00:27I understand it, and it's very simple when you break it down.
00:32They painted themselves into a corner twice in their negotiations with Dak.
00:36First when they let his rookie contract play out, they tagged him once, they tagged him
00:40a second time, and then they woke up one day and realized, holy crap, he can walk away
00:45after the year of the second tag, we better turn this into a contract.
00:49And Dak Prescott and his representatives did exactly what Jerry would have done in the
00:53same situation, squeeze every ounce of leverage out of it.
00:57So he's got a four-year, $160 million deal that was designed to get renegotiated after
01:02three years.
01:04The third year came and went.
01:05I think they toyed with the idea of playing it out.
01:08They realized right before the start of the season, holy crap, he can walk away after
01:11this season, we better do something.
01:13So they give him a deal now that's guaranteed for, I think, four more years as a practical
01:19matter, they can't walk away from this.
01:21So your most important player, your most expensive player, the centerpiece of your
01:24franchise is Dak Prescott.
01:26He wanted Mike McCarthy to stay because he wants continuity.
01:29They low-balled, I believe, Mike McCarthy on a short-term offer.
01:32He wanted a longer-term deal, and then it fell apart.
01:34They surely negotiated.
01:35They claimed they didn't.
01:36They surely negotiated in the eight days after the season ended and the day that they announced
01:39the parting of ways.
01:41So we've got to placate Dak.
01:43And there's two choices, Kellen Moore and Brian Schottenheimer.
01:48And Kellen Moore might not be cheap because the Saints are closing in on him, so let's
01:52go with Brian Schottenheimer.
01:53I understand that.
01:54But at the same time, it's not an accident that it was announced on a Friday night.
02:00They knew exactly what the reaction was going to be.
02:04They would have dropped that thing during the Eagles-Commanders game.
02:09They would have, just like they announced during Seahawks-Eagles five years ago that
02:13Jason Garrett wasn't coming back.
02:15They leaked during the Rams-Vikings playoff game that they'd talked to Deion Sanders.
02:20And they made sure they announced it the morning of the first week of the 2024 regular season
02:24that Dak's contracted.
02:25But they know how to bigfoot a news cycle, and they also know how to run and hide from
02:28a news cycle, and that's what they did.
02:29So I understand it.
02:30I understand everything about it.
02:32Because I see through the grift, and I think more and more people are starting to see through
02:35the grift, and they're going to have some issues going forward unless they start acting
02:39the way that they talk.
