00:00Oh, this is nice.
00:01Look at it.
00:02Look at it.
00:03This is nice.
00:04A complete revolution.
00:05Take a look at Charlie's yard now.
00:07Can you believe Howard started this transformation just a few days ago?
00:11Wow, you got a lot done.
00:13We did.
00:14Holy s***.
00:15How many different species we got here?
00:16Like 15, 20?
00:17By the time we're all done, there'll be probably around 150 to 200 species of plants in here.
00:23We were talking with Charlie about the lead plant, too.
00:25It just has like a super rare plant.
00:29There's none of that available in any of the nurseries right now.
00:31It's a morphocannilata.
00:32It's got to be from some specialized grower.
00:34Our friend Lydia, she's growing a bunch of them.
00:36I think we're going to try to find one.
00:38Oh my God, that's amazing.
00:39Yeah.
00:40And it would be so simple, right?
00:41If we could just plant that plant everywhere, it wouldn't be going extinct.
00:44Yeah.
00:45Like no brainer.
00:46To learn more about endangered native plants and how they support the web of life in South Florida,
00:51we meet up with the legendary naturalist, Roger Hammer.
00:54You know, Roger's written 12 or 13 books,
00:57and so I can't think of a better tour guide for the flora of South Florida than him.
01:07Whoa.
01:09Yeah, look at this, a verdant green paradise.
01:11A secret garden, if you will.
01:13He created an oasis.
01:15Seeing Roger's garden helps us imagine what Charlie's yard will become,
01:19which is a functioning piece of the wild ecosystem.
01:21All these native plants, most of them were brought here by migratory birds.
01:26Just by planting these plants, you know, you're going to attract birds that are moving through.
01:30You know, you kind of form these stopover places, or if enough people do it,
01:34you form a corridor for migratory birds to move through.
01:37Rather than pushing all of nature out, you're bringing nature home.
01:40You know, it's a habitat.
01:42We've had Cooper's hawks nest here.
01:44Cooper's hawks winter in South Florida,
01:46where they fly around occasionally ripping a hedge off of doves, starlings, and pigeons.
01:50Cooper's hawks are an indicator species,
01:53meaning if they're around, then the ecosystem is mostly intact.
01:56And if you want to see what Charlie's really going for in his yard,
01:59you've got to visit the Everglades.
02:01Is this something we could do?
02:03We're going to head there now.
02:04Woo!
02:05We're going to go check out some native habitat.
