00:00When you are dubbed America's team, you start in Dallas.
00:04A theatrical introductory press conference for the Cowboys,
00:08for Brian Schottenheimer himself.
00:10His first head coaching role after nearly two and a half decades
00:14as an assistant of some sort in the National Football League
00:18the previous three years in Dallas.
00:20But a lot said from Jerry Jones and his son Stephen Jones
00:25about the outlook of this organization.
00:29Scott, there was a very long answer from Jerry Jones
00:32that really got this started yesterday.
00:35Simple question, why did you end up hiring Brian Schottenheimer
00:40that led to Jerry Jones really kind of saying
00:43you don't understand my pedigree.
00:45I have wanted to be a head coach.
00:47Here is why I have done all the things that I have done.
00:50You don't consider this a risk.
00:51It's the biggest risk of my career to hire a first time head coach
00:56and even got emotional in that answer.
01:00Scott, what did you make of the introductory press conference in Dallas?
01:05Yeah, now listen, it's a little weird, right?
01:07I mean, again, I'm in favor of the hire.
01:09But I wish they would have just said, take control of the situation.
01:14You know, and how you do that by don't opening up the Pandora's box
01:17to speculation on whether it was good, bad, or indifferent.
01:19Really, and you knew you were going to be asked these questions, right?
01:22So I would have liked Jerry and everyone within that organization
01:25to really come forward.
01:26He's our guy.
01:27He's been with us for a long time.
01:29You know, we wanted to have someone work with Dak Prescott.
01:31Prescott likes him.
01:32We've had success.
01:33He's been part of that success on offense in the regular season.
01:36You know, really kind of take control and silence the critics.
01:40And they really didn't do that yesterday.
01:42They just kind of like, you know, allowed the critics to have their say
01:45and have the speculation about whether this is a good hire or not a good hire.
01:49I wish they would have had a little bit more control of it.
01:52Yes, I would agree, Scott.
01:53Again, as we kind of discussed yesterday on the show,
01:56as I have shared across a variety of programs
01:59on the Sports Grid Network in the last 24 hours plus,
02:02I actually root for Brian Schottenheimer.
02:05I hope he does very well.
02:06I still do not believe this coaching search in Dallas was conducted
02:10in the correct manner.
02:12And I still have a ton of questions about Jerry Jones
02:15and his son, Steven Jones, leading in that front office positions.
02:20And Scott, again, when they were speaking yesterday,
02:23and Jerry Jones trying to, I think, be defensive
02:26and debunk the idea that this was a comfortable hire
02:30or he hired somebody to be yet another puppet man
02:33and to say yes to everything that he desires with the Cowboys.
02:37To do so in his explanation,
02:39by calling it the greatest risk of his career,
02:42to hire a head coach with zero head coaching experience,
02:46you are almost working against yourself in what you are saying.
02:52That was the Jerry Jones component.
02:54And there was Steven Jones when asked about how they evaluate success
02:58within the organization in saying,
03:01we self-evaluate, we look at what we have done well,
03:04what we have done poorly,
03:05and the so-called, as he said, in air quotes,
03:09drought the Cowboys have seen in the last 30 years
03:12from winning a conference championship or, of course, a Lombardi trophy.
03:17That answer, above all else, Scott,
03:20really rubbed people the wrong way associated with the star yesterday.
03:24They were not pleased with the idea that Steven Jones was sitting there
03:28and almost mocking 29 consecutive years
03:31of not reaching the NFC Championship game
03:34since the last Super Bowl win for Dallas in 1995.
03:38Yeah, and that ultimately is the problem, right?
03:41Picture a pyramid and what's at the very, very top
03:44and everything else supports it.
03:46Well, at the very, very top is Dallas thinks
03:48they've been successful for 30 years,
03:50whereas the American public realizes they haven't been
03:53when you compare it to Super Bowls.
03:54But if they think they've been successful,
03:56well, then why change things?
03:58You know, and you think about it,
04:00you know, in all his years of voting the Cowboys, right?
04:02He got rid of Tom Landry.
04:03Okay, so we're not going to count that.
04:04He hires Jimmy Johnson, powerful man.
04:07That doesn't work out, you know, because they can't get along
04:09even though he was his best buddy.
04:11He hires Bill Parcells.
04:12But other than that, you go back to Barry Switzer or Jason Garrett,
04:17Mike McCarthy, who is desperate for a job.
04:19He's always hired guys, Ben, that he could control.
04:22So if he thinks that's been successful,
04:25why would this hire be any different?
04:27I'm more amazed at the Cowboy fan
04:29who was called for McCarthy to get fired.
04:31That they're so surprised that he went down this road again.
04:34Well, what else would you expect?
