00:00The European Union supports Denmark, said European Council President António Costa
00:05in an exclusive interview with Euronews.
00:10U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that the U.S. is not excluding to seize
00:14Greenland by force, an autonomous territory in the Kingdom of Denmark.
00:19Obviously, for us, the territorial integrity of Denmark, the sovereignty of Denmark, the
00:28stability of its borders, as you can imagine, is obviously an essential issue for us.
00:34On trade, the President of the European Council considers it normal that each party, the U.S.
00:39and the European Union, has interests which they seek to defend.
00:44Faced with the threat of a rise in tariffs agitated by Donald Trump, António Costa calls
00:48not to speculate or dramatize.
00:51Europe is ready for dialogue and will react if the threat becomes real.
00:55If the U.S. feels that there is a problem with the European Union, we obviously sit
01:02down to dialogue and to seek to see how we can, together, solve this problem.
01:09Naturally, just as the U.S. wants to defend its interests, the European Union wants to
01:13defend the interests of its companies, of its citizens, of our Union.
01:20On the rapprochement of Hungary and Slovakia with Russia, António Costa assured that the
01:24member states have always managed to overcome their differences to renew unanimously the
01:29sanctions against Russia.
01:31When questioned by the journalist, he said that each member state is free to stay or
01:35leave the EU.
01:37Now, participating in the European Union is an act of freedom.
01:43The United Kingdom, when it decided to leave, we were all in a state of shame, but it exercised
01:47its freedom to leave.
01:49As being in the European Union is an act of freedom.
01:51And what I see every day, and now I see more intensely in these new functions, is that
01:56despite the different points of view and the diversity of opinions, there is a great desire
02:02like one of the 27 to be together.
02:04That's why we're here.
02:06And that's why many others want to join us.
02:11The full interview is to be found on Thursday in the Europe Conversation.
02:17Defence will be at the heart of this conversation ahead of next week's informal summit of European
02:22leaders in Brussels.
