00:00And in barely a couple of hours, the year of the slimy, stealthy, and slithering serpent kicks off.
00:06And in ground zero for this year's celebration of Kung He Fat Choy,
00:10our Denise Osorio has set up a spot to observe the mirth, pageantry,
00:15the sounds and sights of celebration in the heart of the Filipino-Chinese community in Manila.
00:20Denise kindly got us up to speed with developments in Chinatown right now.
00:31Yes, William, tonight we witness yet another popular tradition being celebrated
00:36that's close to the hearts of the Filipino-Chinese community here in Binondo, Manila,
00:41celebrating the Lunar New Year with prosperous wishes.
00:46Known as the heart of Chinatown in the Philippines,
00:49people have flocked to this area from all parts of the country
00:52just to slither in the year of the wood snake.
00:56As you can see just behind me, how the whole place is filled with celebratory air
01:00and decorated with all sorts of red lanterns and lucky charms and colorful bright lights.
01:06Many of the Catholic Filipino-Chinese community are attending mass at the Binondo Church,
01:12a tradition that resonates with Filipino cultures of greeting the new year with solemn prayer.
01:17On the other side of the area, some are praying with lit incense sticks,
01:20whilst others are exchanging items that hopefully brings luck in the year of the snake.
01:25And of course, there will be loud and bright fireworks when the clock strikes midnight
01:29and thereafter as it is believed to ward away bad spirits and welcome good luck.
01:34William, many roads are already closed even as I speak and well before midnight
01:38given an estimated 1.5 million people are expected to descend on Binondo and celebrate here tonight.
01:44As of 9pm, the Binondo-Intramuros bridges are shut down to vehicular traffic.
01:49The same goes with both northbound and southbound lanes of Jones Bridge.
01:53There's a whole stretch of Quentin Paredes Street from Padre Burgos Avenue
01:57all the way to Dasmarina Street and Plaza Cervantes.
02:00William, officials are encouraging people, families to come down here tonight
02:05to celebrate along with the festivities but make sure to get a good grip of your children
02:10as to not lose them in the crowd.
02:12Also tonight, after the fireworks show, there will be a drone show which will add sparkle to the night.
