00:002. Second Congressional Commission on Education, or EDCOM 2, reveals only 25% of Filipino children
00:08meet the recommended energy intake. Malnutrition is chronic for millions of kids. Underweight
00:13Filipino children 3 to 5 years old were found to consume 20% less protein, 40% less total
00:20fat and 35% less carbohydrates than recommended. EDCOM 2 also shows Filipino children under
00:26the age of 5 are stunted and has remained persistently high from 2000 to 2020. The economic
00:32cost of stunting is pegged at 174.4 billion pesos a year. This despite programs born out
00:39of legislation such as the Kalusugan at Nutrisyon ng Magnanay Act. Unlike the Philippines, countries
00:45such as Peru, Bangladesh and Vietnam have made considerable progress in addressing stunting
00:50over the years. While the government has feeding programs, EDCOM 2 considers these insufficient.
