Transcript
00:00It's golden time in Cincinnati. That's right. Al Golden was officially introduced today as Bengals defensive coordinator. He sat right here and
00:08Talked alongside Zack Taylor for 30 plus minutes
00:12My reaction my thoughts on what Al and Zack had to say right now on Cincinnati Bengals talk
00:18You

00:43Like I said, Al Golden Zack Taylor they were here at Pacor stadium talking and
00:49Talk for over 30 minutes. It's
00:52Audio that you can hear on this feed. It's video that you can watch on YouTube and
00:57It's time to dive into some of these takeaways
00:59By the way, the takeaways brought to you by Rivertown inquiry and Rivertown inquiry
01:03Calm make sure you check them out today
01:04If you're looking for anything orange and black related or any kind of Cincy gear they got the best apparel in town
01:12but let's dive into this because a big reason why the Bengals let go of Luenna rumo was
01:19their
01:20Draft plans and who they drafted didn't align at some point
01:26With the in-season playing development getting the most out of their roster
01:31Dax Hill talented player Jordan battle talented player Myles Murphy talented player and they either didn't develop enough to get on the field or
01:39Luenna rumo didn't want to put them on the field or Luenna rumo didn't trust them enough to play on the field all of these
01:44Things happen and all these different circumstances as to why?
01:48Well, you got to get more out of your young guys about of your draft picks the guys that you do choose to pick if
01:54You are picking them
01:56You got to get more out of them
01:57and so the player development part was the number one thing to me and I thought Al Golden did a really good job of
02:03Answering and I'm gonna play a clip of him in just a second and it's a lengthy clip
02:07but good job of answering that because it's not just
02:12You have a plan and then you have to pivot quickly
02:14No, you have a plan for these guys from the moment you draft them or a plan for these guys
02:19like the Dax Hills Myles Murphy's all these guys that he's going to be coaching that are
02:24younger or unproven or have a lot to prove or have a lot to do and
02:29so that's what they're doing this week is they're gonna put together a plan for the existing roster and
02:34Then you move on to the draft and all of those things free agency
02:37But that's the the beauty of it is if you're out golden
02:43You have time now to evaluate who fits who doesn't what you want out of these guys what you don't it's a fresh set of eyes
02:50But when it comes to development
02:53it starts
02:55With developing the way he developed at Notre Dame where he was able to get a lot of freshmen on the field where he's able
03:00to get a lot of contributors
03:02That that
03:03Developed the Xavier Watts kid who a couple of years ago wasn't considered a high draft prospect had 13 interceptions over the past two years
03:11developed into that and
03:13Now he's gonna be a day one day to draft pick and a lot of people are gonna mock him to the Bengals because he's
03:18That rangy safety that can tackle that the Bengals desperately need so without further ado
03:22Al golden was asked about player development
03:25And if he his approach can be similar to what it was in the college game at Notre Dame
03:31To here in the NFL as far as developing players. I think player development is
03:36Again, it starts with the head coach starts with Zach starts with the strength staff
03:40Starts with nutrition starts in the training room
03:43Just everybody being on the same page and then just having a clear plan for them. I think it's really important
03:49I said earlier like I don't want anything to be gray. I want the guys to be stimulus response defense, you know
03:56just
03:57You know when you recognize go, you know, and part of that is just how do we make it quiet in their minds?
04:03And and and we do that in the offseason with development
04:07With making sure that each player knows the two or three things that they got to get better at
04:13while they're learning the systems and
04:16And just really drilling down on that because everybody needs to improve
04:20Everybody, you know started with me, you know as soon as they come back and
04:25And that's what we're gonna do we're gonna make sure it's really tight package and make sure it's it's
04:30It's condensed in terms of what they need to improve on and keep it small. Keep it small. Keep it small refine it play fast
04:36play with energy
04:38And play together
04:48Yeah, certainly from a development standpoint that um, we talked about this last Wednesday just that onboarding
04:54You know, how good can you get on, you know as onboarding?
04:58When the rookies come in, you know, because you know
05:01I think the one thing that we were proud of last year in South Bend was the number of
05:07Freshmen that played for us and played significantly and to do that you have to be great at onboarding
05:12You know, there has to be a quick transition. They have to know precisely where their eyes need to go
05:17in the playbook exactly what techniques were teaching and
05:21And take the source to them go go right to them in terms of how they learn best and whether that's on their phone
05:28Through video whatever that case may be just make it make it really really accessible so they can be a continuous learner
05:35And I think that's gonna start the second, you know, we get we get that we make that phone call and we draft somebody
05:41I thought that was huge that that he was
05:45willing to go in-depth about
05:48Exactly what his approach is gonna be with these guys from the moment they get that draft call moving forward and that has to be the
05:56case
05:57Like I I think of Dax Hill and Zack Taylor sat up here and said, oh well
06:02Yeah, our rookie isn't gonna play special teams the night
06:04He was drafted and then he couldn't get on the field as a rookie
06:07They weren't getting him on the field as a rookie, even though he's super talented
06:09I know there are people in this building that think he's really talented but wasn't on the field that can't happen
06:14You have to have the visions aligned
06:17when you're taking someone whether it's in the first round or the fifth round the plan for them has to align and I don't think
06:22It did all the way at times here in Cincinnati
06:26And so whether it's that another thing Al Golden did and by the way enter the jungle tomorrow night 8 Eastern Tuesday
06:32I go one-on-one with Al Golden. I probably should have mentioned that at the top
06:36I will talk one-on-one with Al Golden. You'll hear me ask about developing players about some of his
06:42Mindset and mentality the the transition process from Notre Dame to here how quickly it is as
06:48He sat up here. I was thinking like man a week ago
06:50You were getting ready to coach in the national championship game. What a difference a week makes boom just like that things change
06:57Other things that stand out about what Al Golden had to say
07:00He talked about the flexibility about how he runs a 4-3
07:04sometimes a 4-2 and
07:06Is happy to be flexible doesn't like to back his way into a corner and put himself into a corner
07:12That this is how it has to be and I think that is really important
07:15Now this idea that he's gonna come here and do exactly what he did at Notre Dame. I think that's pretty unrealistic
07:21I think he doesn't think that either and
07:24That's a good thing because you're only gonna play so much man-to-man anyways in the NFL. So to me
07:30Whether it's adaptability whether it's the fundamental stuff
07:34how many times did we talk about tackles and miss tackles and doing basic things hit all of that he touched on all of that and
07:41That's what you want now, does it need to be executed? Absolutely. Do they need to find the right guys? Absolutely
07:46I and I did talk to him. I think my favorite part of my one-on-one interview with Al is
07:52what
07:54It could mean for the Bengals that he spent the past three years at Notre Dame
07:58And it's it's really good stuff there because he kind of pulls back the curtain a little bit on on how it could help realistically
08:05moving forward in their evaluation process all offseason and into the draft, so
08:11Look, I've said this a few times. I
08:14Think he's a good football coach. Anytime your favorite team gets a good football coach. You should be happy
08:19I know there are questions about the process and all those things. I'm not sure it's going to work
08:23But what I do know is
08:25From an approach standpoint feels like he fits
08:28I think you can ask anyone at Notre Dame if you want if he's a good football coach or not, too
08:34He clearly had some skins on the wall here
08:38But it's not like Zack Taylor was just gonna hire out golden because it's his buddy who I coach with them before
08:45Why would you do that? There's a reason you fired Lou you have to get this, right and
08:49It's it's introductory press conference day, but everything that Al said
08:56made sense and appeared to align with what the Bengals were looking for and
09:01That makes sense. Now, what are they looking for? They're looking for someone that's gonna develop young guys
09:05They're looking for someone that's gonna get guys ready to go and hit the ground running
09:09Al talked about he has a
09:1110 a 10 part installation process likes to throw a lot at guys in the spring so they can recall it in
09:17Training camp when you're really grinding he talked about playing fast. I want to play fast
09:22You want to empower these guys to play fast, which they weren't doing until December. We have multiple accounts of that
09:28Oh, we're playing faster. All right. I need you to play fast week one against the Patriots
09:34Not week 14. Not when the season's over after you lost at the Steelers in week 13. You can't do it
09:40you gotta play fast before that and
09:42Hopefully he can get that out of them. The other thing that I thought was really
09:46it
09:48Really good and I think would have played well with any players that were watching or have watched by the way if you're a Bengals
09:53Player watching you could check out Al Golden's press conference
09:56We posted the entire thing right here on Cincinnati Bengals talk audio or the video
10:02but the the thing of
10:05Empowering these guys to make different checks make different calls
10:09I think that's really important to especially at the NFL level, but I Notre Dame he did that and it's going to happen here
10:15and
10:17what it is is it builds a trust and it builds a rapport and
10:21If you can do that if you can find the right guys
10:24And I think it would go a long way one other thing that he mentioned at the beginning that I thought was really interesting
10:29Was I remember a few years ago and was like, oh, this is the captain's draft
10:332020 was the captain's draft all these guys besides T Higgins who came out early were captains
10:37He would have been a captain had he stayed at Clemson. Oh
10:40The captain's draft well, I was here for that I
10:45was part of the
10:46Logan Wilson Hakeem Davis Gaither Marcus Bailey draft
10:49I
10:50was part of the
10:51Find the right character guys that are going to be able to do all the things that you want them to do and they also have
10:56the physical gifts
10:57Maybe the Bengals need to get back to that a little bit and that was something he hit on early in his 30 plus minute
11:03News conference as well. Make sure you check out that entire thing
11:06It is worth your time and I think that
11:10It's probably going to tell you something about the Bengals new defensive coordinator good bad ugly
11:16you be the judge, but I would say that overall that you're
11:20You're going to be pleased there
11:22Also before we go the Bengals did introduce a new linebackers coach today
11:26Mike Hodges spent the past six seasons in New Orleans has been their linebackers coach since 2020 and
11:33So there you go a new addition to Zach Taylor's coaching staff to Al Golden's defensive staff Chuck Burks is
11:40Staying on as cornerbacks coach Jordan Kovacs is staying on a safeties coach and they officially introduced Jerry Montgomery
11:46Who is their defensive line coach and run game coordinator for the defense?
11:51So the staff the coaching staff is taking shape
