China’s New Year is approaching and, like much of Europe, a number of celebrations have been organized in Brussels.

Events were arranged in coordination with Jiangsu's Tourism Department, to showcase the unique cultural heritage of the Chinese province.

CGTN Europe correspondent William Denselow reports.

00:00It's one of the oldest forms of Chinese opera, and events like this show that Kunqu is very much alive.
00:08It's the first time audiences outside of China are seeing this orchestra's production of the Peony Pavilion.

00:31This event is taking place at the China Cultural Centre in Brussels.
00:35It's a chance to share some New Year traditions.
00:39That is a good opportunity to introduce our culture to all of the world.
00:45Brussels is the centre of Europe, so I think here have many different culture people coming here,
00:52and it's a really good time to let people know our culture.
00:56A particular focus here is on the culture of Jiangsu Province.
01:00Those here say Jiangsu Province is one of the cradles of Chinese civilisation,
01:05and this event has been curated to draw on its cultural significance.
01:12As well as being an important region for cultural and economic development,
01:16organisers also hope to promote Jiangsu's natural beauty.
01:20Jiangsu Province is one of the very important provinces in China,
01:25which has, at the same time, we have large rivers, big lakes.
01:31This year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and the European Union.
01:37Those here hope cultural exchanges like this will bring the two sides even closer together.
