A new study has revealed that TikTok, the wildly popular video-sharing app, may have a larger carbon footprint than that of a small country like Greece. The study, conducted by Greenly, a Paris-based carbon accounting firm, estimates TikTok's 2023 emissions in the US, UK, and France at around 7.6 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). This surpasses the combined emissions of other social media giants like X (formerly Twitter) and Snapchat in the same region. The study attributes TikTok's significant carbon footprint to its addictive nature. With an average user spending 45.5 minutes daily on the app, significantly more than other platforms like Instagram (30.6 minutes), users generate a substantial amount of emissions. While TikTok has pledged to become carbon neutral by 2030, concerns remain about the company's transparency.
