00:00I think, listen, the bottom line is it's difficult to be a Newcastle player. They're at the minute fifth or sixth in the league, doing really well. There's a lot of physical demands the Premier League has on players.
00:11Eddie Howell, the staff have been really open to me, really open in terms of communicating and spoke to me and brought me in and have invited me into different discussions, which has been fantastic for me personally, but also it gives the boys an opportunity to impress.
00:27They've been up quite a bit. I've got regular interaction with the first team staff, telling them who's doing well. After the game tonight, I'll voice note a couple of the staff and give a report back.
00:36From my point of view, it's an honour to work with people of that level. Eddie Howell is someone I've looked up to for many years.
00:43At Newcastle, Diarmuid O'Carroll's work with Eddie Howell will be vital to the development and progress of the young players within the club. His coaching may allow for those players one day to step out at St James' Park as part of the first team.
00:59Whilst the majority of scrutiny at the club will naturally go towards Eddie Howell and the first team, O'Carroll's role cannot be understated, as he made clear that the staff and the structure of the club has allowed him to settle in very quickly.
01:10Brilliant. Really, really good. Great staff around me, which always helps. Obviously, Steve Harper is a big part of coming in, overseeing the academies there as a support, and then the likes of Jack Ross and different staff.
01:22Aki and different people are there to help me out, and then the staff around me within the squad are brilliant as well. All have had experience of both youth and first team.
01:30I've settled into the area well. I think we've done OK on the pitch, which is always good, and now I'm looking to kick on and try and get a few more players, like Trevann, pushing towards the first team as well.
01:39It's a fantastic football club, and I've always had a soft spot for it over the years as a team, a team you support or a team you look at from a distance.
01:47But I think you can see the infrastructure and the club is there, and also, as I say, I've always been a massive fan of Eddie Howell and the staff and what they've done through their time at Bournemouth and now when they've come here.
01:57So, it's someone that I'm hoping to learn a little bit more from as I go.
02:01O'Carroll was speaking after his side dispatched of Gateshead in the National League Cup, a competition he's a big fan of.
02:07I just think it's real football. It's men's football. It's a first-team game. It feels like a first-team game. There's obviously a small crowd in as well.
02:15We're always away from home, so you go to different grounds, different challenges. Obviously, Tamworth have gone on and played Tottenham and done brilliant, and we played them a few weeks beforehand.
02:23So, that's the level of test we're getting, and it's realistic for our boys to whip themselves against them, and obviously physically a big challenge for them as well.
02:31We tweaked the system a little bit today, tweaked our press a little bit, but credit to the boys. They took it on board. They went at it to the letter, and I think that was a big part of what we'd done, and we were hard of the beat as a result of it.
02:42Ultimately, though, O'Carroll was keen to outline the aim of developing the Magpies' young talents.
02:47Yeah, it's not individuals at this level. Ultimately, it is an individual game, but I think the message I'm getting across to the boys is if we win or we play well as a team or collectively we're competitive, the individual flies off the back of it.
