00:00Good morning teammates and welcome to Treasures of the Game.
00:06Again, I am your host Rafael Bandairel and as always, we have our resident subject matter expert, Dr. Michael Pico-Messina.
00:15Doc, good morning to you.
00:17Good morning again, Raph, and good morning to all of our viewers here in Treasures of the Game.
00:23We're back with another episode, Sir Raph.
00:25We're going to ride our time machine again and now we're going to the 30s and 70s.
00:31I believe you have some items here that we're going to show our teammates where we're going to start, Doc.
00:37We're going to start our time travel in the 1930s, particularly in the year 1936.
00:441936, okay. What do we have there, Doc?
00:47So, in this year, in 1936, the 1936 Berlin Olympics was held here.
00:54So, what is the significance of that 1936 Olympics?
00:59So, in this staging of the Olympics, the official sport for the first time was basketball.
01:07So, it's a very landmark period, especially for our basketball fans.
01:12So, Doc, it means that since the first time basketball was included in the Olympics,
01:18we already have a statue as depicted here in the photo of the magazine that you brought today, Doc.
01:23Yes, because before the Olympics, we have what we call the Far Eastern Olympic Games.
01:29So, here in this tournament, the Philippines dominated the basketball.
01:35So, actually, 9 out of 10 times that the basketball tournament was held, the Philippines was the champion.
01:41So, when there was the first tournament in the Olympics for basketball,
01:46it was natural that the Philippines represented the Asian continent.
01:52Okay, Doc, so we can see that this magazine depicts a game between the Philippines, of course, and Uruguay.
02:01And it says here, in this game, the Philippines won with a score of 33 to 23, Doc.
02:07So, who are the notable figures we know in this picture, Doc?
02:12Okay, so this magazine came from the year of the Olympics, 1936.
02:19So, if we look at this picture, this is a portrait during that tournament.
02:26If we look at it, look at the floor, it's not just cement, it's like they're playing a clay court.
02:34Like a floor.
02:35Then, if we look at it, there's no cover.
02:38So, actually, it was raining during this time, and the people were wearing umbrellas.
02:44So, here, some of our famous players are Primitivo Martinez, Jacinto Siracruz, or Jumping Jack Siracruz,
02:55and maybe one of the most famous players back then, and also their team captain, is Ambrosio Padilla.
03:03Okay, Doc. Speaking of Ambrosio Padilla, we have other items related to this figure.
03:10Doc, what is the story of this picture?
03:14So, this is a picture postcard of Ambrosio Padilla from the 1930s.
03:19So, this is the uniform they wore when they played for the Olympics and also for the Far Eastern Games.
03:26So, it's like in our previous episodes where we showed the jerseys of our national team.
03:34If you look here, it's very simplistic.
03:37So, there's just the number of the player and the emblem or insignia of our Republic.
03:43So, if you look at the number on this postcard, Sir Ambrosio Padilla is number 3.
03:49So, it means, at that time, he was the team captain of our team.
03:53There's also another picture here, Doc. It's an action shot.
03:56I believe they're fighting for a rebound. Is that right?
04:02Actually, it's like the Philippines is defending.
04:06Yes. So, this is one of the pictures that we can see on the internet when we type Philippines and Berlin Olympics.
04:17So, here we can see our Philippine players.
04:21They're in this dark color.
04:25As you can see, the Philippine insignia there.
04:27Then, they're fighting for a rebound.
04:30But Doc, Ambrosio Padilla's career didn't stop when he became a basketball player
04:37because later on, he made other historical feats.
04:41And about that, our other item, Doc. Is that right?
04:45Yes. So, here, Ambrosio Padilla's service for our country didn't end by being a national basketball player.
04:55So, he became one of the top matchers of the bar exam.
04:58And eventually, he became a Senator of our Republic.
05:02So, this is a sample signature of Sir Ambrosio Padilla.
05:10Yes. It's like a cover letter saying that he's the Chairman of the Committee on Justice of our Senate in the Philippines.
05:20Wow, Doc. It's hard to do that.
05:22You became a national team player.
05:24Then, you became a lawyer and a Senator.
05:27We can see that Sir Padilla is very talented and multi-talented from the sports going to the political arena.
05:35Yes. That's right.
05:36And speaking of the Berlin Olympics, Doc, we have another item here about that event.
05:42So, this, Raph, is one of my favorite items in my collection.
05:48So, before, when our athletes travel, going to and from where they compete,
05:56because now, it's easy, right?
05:58Yes.
05:59Because it's a first-class plane, business class, and so on.
06:04But before, they just ride a ship.
06:07So, they ride a ship from the Philippines to the venue.
06:14Then, they ride a train or they will have a ride going to the actual area of the event.
06:22So, this.
06:23So, this is a passenger manifest on a ship.
06:27So, here are the names of the contingents of the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
06:45This is their ticket or the manifest that proves that they rode this ship.
06:53So, Doc, we're done with the 1930s.
06:55So, let's put these aside.
06:57And now, let's move on to the 1960s.
07:01Do you know, Sir Raph, that although the most popular league in the Philippines is the PBA.
07:07Of course.
07:08Before that, there was a league that dominated the Philippines from the 1940s to around the 1980s.
07:16That became our main basketball attraction here in the country.
07:21What league are you referring to, Doc?
07:24So, the name of that league is MICAA.
07:27So, this is the Manila Industrial Commercial Athletic Association.
07:33Now, we are very fortunate to have two items about that league in a large part of the history of MICAA.
07:42Doc, what are these?
07:44So, in the PBA, we have rivalries, right?
07:48Like Crispa Toyota.
07:50Now, Manila Classico.
07:52Manila Classico.
07:53Back then, MICAA also had a great rivalry.
07:58Which is the Eco Painters and Ismael Steel Admirals.
08:04So, what we're going to show our teammates now is a sample of the jerseys that those players wore in the 1960s.
08:13So, this is a sample of an Eco jersey.
08:16So, we can see the logo of Eco.
08:19Doc, this is number 16.
08:21Who wore this?
08:22So, actually, these jerseys are unique because both of them were worn by Ed Roque.
08:29So, both of them played with those rivals?
08:33Yes.
08:34Like NBA, they played with Celtics and Lakers.
08:38Okay.
08:40So, these jerseys were worn by him in the 1960s.
08:46So, this jersey was also worn by him.
08:50But now, it's number 15.
08:53Ismael Steel.
08:54If we look at the back, it's just a number.
08:57So, it's like the National Basketball jersey that we saw in previous episodes.
09:03The jerseys of professional basketball players are also simple.
09:08And we can see here, Doc, there's a signature.
09:11So, what's the story behind that? Did you meet him?
09:14Or did the signature come with the item?
09:18So, Ed Roque asked me to sign this.
09:23And when he asked me to sign this, I also signed it.
09:27So, at least, it's more legitimate that these items came from him.
09:34Alright, teammates.
09:35That's where our episode for today ends.
09:38I hope you enjoyed our blast from the past.
09:41The items we saw were amazing and very wide-ranging in history.
09:47I am your host, Rafael Bandayrel.
09:50And I am Dr. Michael Rico Masina.
09:52Until the next episode of Treasures of the Game, sharing treasures, sharing stories.
