00:00It's time to brighten up even more your day and inspire a shiny story of a student innovator
00:06who made history as a Filipino who participated in a global AI innovations competition.
00:13Let's watch this.
00:16Part of the life of a farmer is to face the challenges in their fields.
00:21These include pests and the ever-changing climate that can cause a big disaster.
00:27In the midst of these challenges, a new solution was devised by a 22-year-old student innovator,
00:33Aldrin Sojourner Gamayon, from San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte.
00:38The AgriConnect app is an app that uses artificial intelligence
00:42to provide real-time information and guidance to farmers
00:46about the possible dangers in their fields.
00:49This idea was also part of the global innovation competition held in Tokyo, Japan.
00:55Let's find out why Sojourner was inspired by this idea here in Sunshine Stories.
01:04We will be joined live here in the studio by a Filipino.
01:09He is one of 110,000 students from 39 countries.
01:15He is a student innovator, Sojourner Gamayon.
01:18Wow, congratulations!
01:20Good morning to all of you.
01:23So, you're also the first Filipino to win in such a competition.
01:26Yes.
01:27I'm so proud of you.
01:29You have a lot of potential.
01:30You're 22 years old.
01:31Tell us about your experience in this competition.
01:33Actually, Ms. Leanne, in the middle of the competition,
01:37I was having my finals also in school because I'm also currently a student.
01:41So, my attention was very divided.
01:43In Ateneo, right?
01:44Yes, I'm currently in Ateneo.
01:45It's the final season.
01:47So, while the competition was happening, I was defending our marketing subject on the side.
01:55So, it was a lot of things.
01:56But then, there were also a lot of setbacks flying into Japan like visa.
02:01Those were very normal issues.
02:02So, I was just there.
02:05I just wanted to experience the feeling of representing the Philippines
02:09and also being on a global stage.
02:11But God gave us something bigger and making that a history.
02:15Well, we're very proud.
02:16What's the prize?
02:17So, the prize is the global winner will be sent to Silicon Valley
02:22wherein I'll be incubated there with a startup venture firm for one month
02:27with the hopes of currently developing the concept and making it a reality for the Filipino farmers.
02:33You're talking about the concept that you pitched in the competition.
02:36Yes.
02:37So, basically, what I'm doing is AgriConnectPH.
02:40It's a startup that helps farmers manage their risks using what we call artificial intelligence
02:47and also the use of smart sensors.
02:49Okay.
02:50So, it's a three-step process.
02:51So, the very first step is you get sensors and you will plant them in the four corners of the patch of land.
02:57And then, these sensors detect the common sources of risks for farmers.
03:03So, the soil that it detects, is it too acidic or too dry, for example.
03:09Second is water levels, is it too low or too high.
03:12And thirdly is pests and insects movement.
03:15Because whenever someone asks me, I always tell them,
03:18sometimes farmers have intuition, right?
03:22But the problem is sometimes they don't detect it fast enough.
03:26Once it manifests with the naked eye, you can only salvage 40% of the crop value.
03:32And then, the value proposition of AgriConnect is through this app and through this mechanism,
03:37you're able to salvage at least 80% to 90% before the disease or the risk begins.
03:43So, from the sensors themselves, it will be sent to our app which has artificial intelligence.
03:48And I do acknowledge that farmers are not very techy.
03:52Yes.
03:53That's why we're using this traffic light system in the app.
03:56So, if it's red, it means it's serious and you need to act on the inside ASAP.
04:00Yellow, they just need to be aware.
04:02And if green, they can go on as normal.
04:04And the third step is the farmer will act on the inside.
04:07So, the aim really is to make it a user-friendly assistant for these farmers
04:11so that they can get their profit and capital back.
04:14Okay. So, it's easy to use and it's easy for our farmers to understand.
04:18I wonder how did you conceptualize this idea?
04:23Where did the inspiration come from?
04:25Actually, two things.
04:26I think the very first one is I come from San Nicolas in Ilocos Norte.
04:31And, you know, from where I am, the industry of farming is big.
04:35And I've always observed how difficult it was.
04:39Growing up, for me, it was two layers.
04:42I feel like if you're a farmer, the fact that you're in the heat of the sun,
04:48you're sacrificing your time and time, that's the hard part.
04:51But as I grew older, I realized there are other risks.
04:56Aside from the fact that you're putting in physical effort,
04:59you're not sure if you'll be able to get your profit back
05:02because there are so many risks that can't be managed quickly.
05:05And I guess the second one is I was fortunate enough to be flown to Singapore last year
05:10to be immersed in the startup ecosystem there.
05:12And I interned for a startup that helped shrimp farmers in Vietnam
05:16manage their risk through disease testing.
05:18So, having to marry these concepts together, that's how I built AgriConnect PH.
05:23You're so great, Sonja.
05:25Your passion in what you're doing,
05:29and your willingness to help our fellow Filipinos in a big way.
05:35You've been thinking about this for 22 years.
05:37How can I help our fellow Filipinos?
05:39I wonder how long you've been doing this.
05:42Yeah, so I only had 60 days to prepare.
05:44Wow, really?
05:45Prior to this competition.
05:46So, those 60 days, it's really understanding the problem itself.
05:50What is the most important problem that needs to be solved?
05:53And I've interviewed 80 agribusinesses and farmers throughout those 60 days.
05:58Because at the end of the day, even if you have such a great solution,
06:01but if that's not what the farmers need,
06:04there's no value that can be given.
06:06So, that's where I spent my time,
06:09connecting with the farmers.
06:12Okay, what's your dream for this app?
06:14Well, I guess my dream in the next 10 years
06:17is to empower 1 million farmers by 2035.
06:21So, if that means being able to help farmers reduce their crop losses
06:26and increase their profits,
06:28in whatever margins that is,
06:29from where they are and from where they want to be,
06:32I hope to be their partner along the way.
06:34Well, so congratulations again.
06:36And we're looking forward to your further development of this app
06:40so that it can benefit Filipino farmers.
06:43Thank you so much.
06:45Thank you, and again, congratulations.
06:47And we're very proud, fellow Filipinos, of your success.
