00:00Perikatan Nasional has set too ambitious a target with its goal of contesting 18 seats
00:07at the Sabah State Assembly elections this year, says political analyst James Chin.
00:13He said the elections of 2020, when Bersatu won 11 of 18 seats contested, could not be
00:19used as the benchmark as the political environment in Sabah was vastly different then.
00:26I personally think that 18 seats is a bit too much.
00:30I think most people will say that Bersatu is a spent force in Sabah, and those winnable
00:36candidates, most of them have actually moved on to GRS or to the other political parties
00:42already.
00:43So, the 18 seats that they're hoping for, if they're lucky, they may win between three
00:49and four.
00:50There is no way they're going to win the 11 again, it's just impossible in Sabah.
00:56Last week, PN Deputy Chairman Hamzah Zainuddin said the coalition was aiming to contest
01:01at least 18 of the 73 state assembly seats in the coming elections.
01:07Another analyst, Romzi Atiung of University Malaysia Sabah, said PN must work with Sabah
01:12parties for the polls while focusing on local issues, rather than national topics to appeal
01:18to Sabahans.
01:20He said that PN must carefully consider the local sentiments, especially when it comes
01:25to slogans and candidates.
01:27However, Chin said almost every party was holding discussions with one another on forming
01:33electoral alliances because no one party would have sufficient support to form the state
01:39government on its own.
