00:00Tomorrow is the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, who will return to the White House.
00:05Now, let's listen to the Philippine Ambassador to the U.S., Jose Manuel Romualdez.
00:10Good morning to you, Ambassador. This is Maris. Let's go live to the first news.
00:15Hi, good morning, Maris.
00:17Yes, first of all, will you be attending the inauguration of U.S. President Trump?
00:20And who are the official Filipinos who are also invited?
00:25Well, actually, I'm the only one invited because the State Department officially invited the representative of each country in the diplomatic corps.
00:37So, that's a lot of capital.
00:39But there are other congressmen who are here today.
00:43They were invited by U.S. congressmen,
00:48such as Deputy Speaker Tony Petalbano and Deputy Speaker Mendoza, who are also here today.
00:56And I think Congresswoman, I don't remember her name,
01:04but we have about four of our congressmen who have been invited by Congressman Joe Wilson.
01:10All right. The inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump was moved indoors.
01:17Is this because of the cold weather in your area or because of security reasons?
01:24Yes, I think it's really cold.
01:29In fact, it's snowing here in Washington, D.C.
01:32And tomorrow, the temperature is something between minus 7 to minus 11 degrees Fahrenheit.
01:40People will really get sick there.
01:43I think President Trump was right in really putting his inauguration inside the Capitol.
01:49And it's also going to be, to a certain extent, a security risk.
01:53Because the security, they're going to be out in the open starting at 5 or 6 in the morning.
02:00And they can get sick.
02:03And obviously, their work will be impeded because of the cold weather.
02:09I understand that 25,000 security personnel will be deployed there.
02:13Have you heard any news about riots or protests against Trump's inauguration?
02:18Well, there is a report that there will be a rally, but I don't think it's going to be anything major.
02:26Because the security officers here in Washington, D.C. are not concerned.
02:31Ambassador, I will also ask, how are the Filipinos, our countrymen there?
02:35Are there a lot of Filipinos who left because it's expected that Trump will be more strict with immigrants?
02:41Well, we are not sure whether there are many of those undocumented, our countrymen have left.
02:48But that's our advice to them.
02:50If they really don't have a legal path, it's better that they go first so that they can return here at some point in time.
02:57Because if you get deported, you really won't be able to return.
03:00But just the same, the first thing that the authorities are telling us,
03:08is that they will prioritize the ones with criminal records and criminal elements who entered the U.S.
03:16and the 1.3 million who were processed for deportation.
03:22Those are the ones they will prioritize.
03:25When it comes to the issue of the South China Sea, is there a big change in the policies of the outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden and incoming President Trump?
03:33I don't think there will be any.
03:36If we heard the confirmation hearing of the incoming Secretary of State Marco Rubio,
03:43it's very clear that the United States is going to be very supportive of Taiwan, the Philippines,
03:50and other countries in the Indo-Pacific region that's facing the challenges with China.
03:55And also, we've talked to other countries that will enter the national security in America,
04:03they are also convinced that the Indo-Pacific region must remain free.
04:11In other words, they are supportive of the countries that are fighting this attempt to dominate the South China Sea.
04:20In other words, we are still expecting the support of the U.S. in the new leadership?
04:26Yes, absolutely. I have no doubt about that.
04:29One of the first issues that President-elect Trump will face is the TikTok ban.
04:34Is there a condition for him to return it fully?
04:37Because he is saying that the TikTok part should be owned by an American firm.
04:43Well, that was passed already as a law by the U.S. Congress.
04:51So they're going to try to push that and save TikTok from being closed down completely here in the U.S.
04:58So there's a possibility that there could be some negotiations that will ensue during the time of President-elect Trump.
05:07I would also like to ask Ambassador, how are our countrymen in Los Angeles?
05:12Are there more affected by the wildfire?
05:15Well, our consulate is telling us that there are Filipinos that were affected by the Palisades fire.
05:25A total of about 150,000 homes have been destroyed.
05:29I'm sure there are a lot of Filipino-Americans.
05:32But we're still assessing the situation.
05:35Our consulate in Los Angeles is coordinating with the local authorities,
05:42who are Filipinos or most especially our Filipino workers who were affected by the Los Angeles fire.
05:50And of course, we are one in the prayer for our countrymen there and of course,
05:55for the other Americans affected by the wildfire.
05:58Thank you very much.
05:59Philippine Ambassador to the U.S., Jose Manuel Dings from Waldez.
06:03Take care.
06:05You got it. Thank you.
