00:00Oh my god, you have so many apps open, what is wrong with you?
00:05Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the best ad-libbed lines
00:10and improvised scenes from actor Tom Holland. There will be a few spoilers ahead, but be honest,
00:15we know you've already seen all these movies. I don't feel so good.
00:21You're alright.
00:23Number 10, Peter's Introduction, Captain America Civil War.
00:27This important scene has a cool story behind it. During the audition process for the MCU's
00:32Spider-Man, Tom Holland went through a screen test with Robert Downey Jr.
00:35It was all these screen tests, and I got to meet Tom while he was in the final run-in there.
00:41God, I don't want to jump the gun. Uh, no, I'm ready, I'm ready.
00:44Okay.
00:45Yeah, I love adventure.
00:47Although Holland had been advised to learn his lines exactly,
00:50RDJ immediately started improvising, and Holland played along.
00:54Obviously it worked and he got the part.
00:55What are you, what are you, what are you doing here?
00:57It's about time we met. Let me get my emails right.
00:59When it came time to actually film Peter's first scene,
01:02the two discovered that Holland's lines had been cut down considerably in the script.
01:06Downey insisted that the kids should get more lines,
01:09and suggested that the two improvise as they had in the audition.
01:12And the Russos sort of said, well, look, you know, this is already a 140-page script,
01:16like we can't, um, spend too much time on this. And Downey was the one that was like,
01:21no, no, no, you're going to want to spend some time on this.
01:23The result is this pitch-perfect introduction,
01:26which captures both actors' charm and natural chemistry.
01:32This film has a much darker tone than Holland's MCU movies.
01:36It follows Cherry and Emily, two young people who are deeply in love,
01:40as Cherry struggles through PTSD after serving in Iraq.
01:43I didn't sleep. When I did, I dreamt of violence.
01:49He turns to prescription pills and later illegal drugs to cope with his trauma,
01:53and Emily joins him in his downward spiral.
01:56This scene represents the moment just before everything goes bad.
01:59I wish I never told you I was leaving.
02:08For Montreal.
02:10Reportedly, it was originally planned to be much shorter,
02:13but the two actors started improvising and the Russo brothers kept the cameras rolling.
02:18It turned into a sweet moment in which Cherry and Emily
02:20reminisce about the early days of their relationship.
02:23But I'm okay with that.
02:30Yeah.
02:35Me too.
02:38It makes the terrible things that follow that much more jarring by contrast.
02:47The bromance between Holland and Jake Gyllenhaal on the set of this movie became legendary.
02:52In fact, the two got along so well that it bled into their on-screen relationship too.
03:09Director John Watts gave the pair some freedom to improvise while filming.
03:12This resulted in a much warmer dynamic between their characters than was originally planned.
03:22It's a hard path.
03:23You see things, you do things, you make choices.
03:28People look up to you.
03:31Even if you win a battle, sometimes they die.
03:33Peter looks up to Mysterio much like Holland looks up to Gyllenhaal.
03:37It makes it easy to understand why Peter eventually hands over Tony Stark's glasses.
03:41It also makes the revelation that Mysterio is a villain that much more shocking.
03:45I thought we were close.
03:48Fury always had to die, but not you.
03:51Stop hiding, Beck!
03:55I tried to help you walk away.
03:57Now you're making me do this.
04:02One of the reasons the MCU has been so successful
04:05is that most of the movies have plenty of comedy to go along with the action.
04:09We're boyfriend and girlfriend now.
04:11Whatever happened to being an American bachelor in Europe?
04:14Peter, those were the words of a boy.
04:17And that boy met a woman.
04:19A very strong and powerful woman.
04:22And now that boy is a man.
04:24In this scene in Venice, Spider-Man attempts to prevent a bell tower from toppling
04:29while Mysterio fights the water elemental.
04:31The physical gag that sees Peter repeatedly smack his head into the giant bell
04:35wasn't in the original script.
04:46It's over!
04:48Holland later revealed that he and his brother came up with the idea together.
04:52They showed it to John Watts, who loved it.
04:54Yeah, my brother Harry and I pieced that together.
04:57Well, I say we pieced it together.
04:58We, like, came up with an idea and pre-vised it.
05:01And when I say we pre-vised it, we shot it on my phone.
05:04Yeah, but he liked it.
05:05Yeah, right.
05:06Yeah, the whole, like, banging into the thing
05:08and then sliding and then banging into it again.
05:10That was awesome.
05:11It's a delightful bit of humor amidst the excitement of the battle.
05:17Number six, The Rooftop, Spider-Man, No Way Home.
05:21Holland bonded with the other two Spider-Men in this film
05:23much like he did with Jake Gyllenhaal in the previous one.
05:26Where are you using your talcum powder?
05:28I'm not really using talcum powder.
05:29Oh, okay.
05:30That's how I started off, was actually talcum powder, yeah.
05:33On Civil War, I was full talcum powder.
05:36Did you?
05:36I did, yeah.
05:38After a while, at first I didn't, with the...
05:41First I didn't.
05:43Wham!
05:44The brotherly dynamic comes across so strongly on screen
05:47that it's hard to believe it wasn't planned.
05:49One of the most poignant scenes where it shows up
05:51is on the rooftop after Aunt May dies.
05:53I'm sorry about May.
06:01Yeah, sorry.
06:04It's the first conversation Peter has
06:05with the alternate universe versions of himself.
06:08No one knows what he's going through better than they do.
06:11John Watts allowed the actors to improvise most of the scene,
06:14and the two older Spideys naturally started sharing
06:16their own experiences and comforting the younger one.
06:20She told me there was a great power.
06:24Comes great responsibility.
06:31Wait, what? How do you know that?
06:33Uncle Ben said it, the day he died.
06:37The day he died.
06:40It is a powerful testament to the talent of these three actors.
06:47It seems like Tom Holland becomes best friends
06:50with everyone he works with.
06:51That was certainly the case with Mark Wahlberg
06:53on the set of Uncharted.
06:54Yeah, I'll come with you.
06:55Really?
06:56What?
06:57Well, that was quick.
06:58What are you talking about?
06:59What, are you just gonna follow her down there like a puppy dog?
07:01What, you want me to come with you, hold your hand?
07:02The two had instant chemistry,
07:04and that translated into a lot of hilarious banter
07:07between their characters that wasn't in the script.
07:09Director Ruben Fleischer was happy to let them do it,
07:12since it produced some of the funniest dialogue in the movie.
07:14Then what's with the cat?
07:16Oh, the cat? She's just for you.
07:18What?
07:19Yeah, life seems super sad.
07:21The relationship between Nate and Sully
07:23is at the heart of both the video game and the film,
07:26and with two leading men like these in the roles,
07:29it was guaranteed box office gold.
07:31But it was a lot of fun,
07:32and we very quickly got into a rhythm
07:34in which we knew how to push each other's buttons
07:37and how to bring out the best in each other
07:40from a humor point of view.
07:46When you're playing opposite the king of improv,
07:48Robert Downey Jr.,
07:49all you can do is try to keep up.
07:51Now he wants to run.
07:52Great.
07:53I want to protect the stone.
07:54And I want you to thank me now.
07:56Go ahead, I'm listening.
07:57During the scene,
07:58Tony, Strange, and Peter are trapped aboard Ebony Maw's spaceship,
08:02and Tony is none too pleased that Peter is there.
08:04As he and Strange argue,
08:06Peter pipes up trying to be helpful.
08:08I'm back up.
08:08No, you're still away.
08:10The adults are talking.
08:11Holland ad-libbed the perfectly timed backup line,
08:14and without missing a beat,
08:15RDJ improvised an impeccable response.
08:18Scenes like this prove that when you have a cast
08:20of brilliantly talented actors,
08:22sometimes the best thing you can do
08:24is toss the script out the window.
08:26Good moral compass.
08:28Restrain.
08:30You're a kid.
08:34You're an Avenger now.
08:35Number three,
08:36The Meme,
08:37Spider-Man No Way Home.
08:38This entire film was basically fan service
08:41for longtime Spidey lovers,
08:42and the cast and crew knew they had to fit
08:44the famous Spider-Man pointing at Spider-Man meme in somewhere.
08:47That man's an imposter.
08:49That man is the imposter.
08:50However,
08:51it took them a while to figure out the right place for it.
08:54Andrew Garfield takes credit with coming up with the idea
08:56to put it into this scene in the chemistry lab,
08:58and it couldn't have turned out better.
09:10It feels natural enough that it doesn't take you out of the moment.
09:13Instead,
09:14it's a nice Easter egg for attentive viewers.
09:26Number two,
09:27The Hug,
09:28Spider-Man Homecoming.
09:29It's no surprise that Holland's best unscripted moments
09:32happen alongside Robert Downey Jr.
09:46After all,
09:46in order for an ad-lib to make it into the final cut,
09:49the co-stars have to react appropriately,
09:51and no one does it better than RDJ.
09:53The scene in which Peter spontaneously hugs Tony in the back of the car
09:57is one of the funniest moments in Homecoming.
10:03Once again,
10:04Holland came up with the idea,
10:06and Downey improvised the perfect response.
10:08Believe it or not,
10:09this isn't the only improvised hug in a Spider-Man movie.
10:13The three-way hug at the end of No Way Home was also unscripted.
10:16It was based on a real-life moment the actor shared
10:19that the director decided to add to the film.

10:41Number one,
10:42I Don't Wanna Go,
10:43Avengers Infinity War.
10:45It's pretty widely agreed that this is the most incredible unscripted moment in the MCU.
10:57According to co-director Joe Russo,
11:01he simply told Holland to act like he didn't want to go.
11:04Holland took the direction literally,
11:06and it turned into this absolutely gut-wrenching scene.
11:09Amazingly,
11:10the parallel scene of Tony's death in Avengers Endgame was also improvised.
11:14We won, Mr. Stark.
11:19We won, Mr. Stark.
11:22We won, you did it, sir, you did it.
11:26The cast was given no script at all
11:28and was simply encouraged to do whatever felt right.
11:31That's putting a lot of faith in your actors.
11:33The fact that it turned out so perfectly
11:35is proof that this group is among the best of the best.
11:39It was a really, really interesting way to shoot
11:41such a kind of pivotal scene of the movie.
11:43Which unscripted moment is your favorite?
11:45Let us know in the comments.
11:46It's too larby?
11:49Not larby enough.
11:51How many times do I have to say larb before you talk to me?
11:56You know I larb you.
11:58I'm just stressed the internship and I'm tired.
12:01Do you agree with our picks?
