'I just wanted to come help somebody': Thousands lend a hand at huge wildfire donation center
Thousands looking to offer a helping hand to those impacted by the Los Angeles wildfires showed up at a huge donation center at the Santa Anita Park racetrack in Arcadia, a city close to the Eaton Fire, on Sunday.
Volunteers waited in long lines for a chance to help with sorting through mountains of donations that included clothing, water, diapers and tinned and dry food.
The Santa Anita effort began when a street vendor announced on TikTok that he wanted to serve hot dogs to firefighters. People who had been inundated with images of destruction jumped at a chance to do something positive and flooded the donation center.
The overflowing donation center was just one of many relief efforts across the region.
Hollywood celebrities have also pledged donations and local restaurants were offering free food to first responders and displaced people.

02:05My dad's school is getting burned down.
02:08Kids cannot go to school.
02:11Kids and grown-ups are homeless.
02:15They don't have anywhere to live.
02:18You know, he's been watching this on the TV with me as well.
02:21And he's been asking, what's going on?
02:23What's up with the fire?
02:24And then today, we woke up.
02:26The air was OK.
02:27And we were like, let's go help.
02:29We have to, because we could easily be the next victims.
02:32She's a fire queen.
02:35Yes, ma'am.
02:43Get back.
02:44Get back.
02:45Get back.
02:46The honky-tonk police.
02:50No, no, no.
02:52We can't come.

03:02My family and I, we all came out because we
03:05want to give back to our city.
03:07We, gratefully, weren't as affected as far as tangible things being burned down
03:14and things like that.
03:15But I think the whole city is affected, whether you've actually
03:18had your belongings burnt or not.
03:21So, I mean, you can smell the soot in the air,
03:23and we were just wanting to get out
03:25and do something, like feel active.
03:27And we're actually giving back in some way
03:29and supporting the community, feeling part of a community.
03:31I think that's a big part of it.
03:33I'm here with my family.
04:03My mom and my sister.
04:05And yesterday, I took some friends over
04:07to come here and help, you know?
04:09Social media has been a great help, you know?
04:12We couldn't have done this without social media,
04:14you know, TikTok, Instagram.
04:16And look, thousands of us are here.
04:28Yes, today I came here.
04:30I have donated the water.
04:33I donated the food, cereals, and pasta.
04:37And also, I donated face masks, as well,
04:41and also some cleaning wipes.
04:44Because for the past few days, so many families,
04:48so many people have been suffering
04:50from this wildfire disaster.
