The Whispering Window
Late one night, Emily sat alone in her tiny apartment, staring at her laptop screen. The deadline for her article loomed, but she couldn’t focus. Every few minutes, she’d glance at the old window across the room, where faint tapping sounds interrupted the silence.
She dismissed it as the wind.
The sound grew louder—soft taps became sharp knocks. Emily’s heart raced. She stood, hesitating, then walked toward the window.
When she reached it, the tapping stopped.
She leaned closer, squinting through the frosted glass, but saw only her reflection staring back. She sighed and turned away.
A whisper froze her in place.
“Let me in.”
Emily whipped around, but no one was there. She pressed her ear to the glass. Nothing. Just her own shallow breathing.
Then she saw it—her reflection smiled at her, though her lips hadn’t moved. The smile stretched unnaturally wide as it mouthed the words again:
“Let me in.”
The reflection’s hand moved to knock on the glass from the inside.
Emily stumbled back, horrified, as cracks began to spread across the window.
She tried to scream, but the sound caught in her throat as the glass shattered.
And something stepped through.
