There was a surprising outcome when a local couple held a fundraiser for New Year based around their costumes as Skegness' Pearly King and Queen. Barry Robinson tells us more...

00:00Okay we're at the CBU pub at Skegness and we're with the very latest
00:05Pearly King and Queen of Skegness and we're with Lynx Knots Air Ambulance we
00:12believe you've just given a check over to them give us a little bit of a
00:15rundown what's going on. Well we came over New Year's Eve with a fancy dress and we came
00:22dressed as Pearly King and Queen and we did a raise some money we got everybody
00:29to guess how many buttons are actually on our outfits first guess was on the
00:35Kings second guess on the Queen and the third guess was on both of us and that
00:41was pound a guess and we managed to raise a hundred and ten pounds. So ten
00:48pound a guess quick mathematics one pound a guess so a hundred and ten
00:53people had a go which really this time of age is not bad going really but you
01:01know that aside the charity and everything else we know it's good for
01:06the air ambulance very expensive to run the air ambulance nowadays so you know
01:12if anybody's out there watching this if you think you can help them get in touch
01:16we'll give you the number on the screen afterwards so you can contact me but we
01:21have a new Pearly King and Queen of Skegness you know that's what it's about
01:26as well so let's let's hear something about the Pearly King and Queen oh we've
01:35gone quiet now. We've done some history and we got in touch with them in London and my family
01:43originally comes from London my dad comes from Bow and my great great
01:49granddad was a trader market trader and he was a Pearly King so it's traced down
01:59because I was born in London I can be an official Pearly Queen so being as I'm
02:06living in Skegness and I was born in London I can be official Pearly Queen of
02:12Skegness. So you was actually born listening to the Bow Bells yes and I do
02:19believe let's get this right that if anyone wants you at any of their functions they can
02:25contact you so again if you want a Pearly King and Queen at your functions
02:31even if it's the Queen or the King you know we never know which way around this
02:35is we don't know who wears the trousers but you know we'll put some numbers up
02:41for you so you'll be able to contact them so once again thank you to Mark for
02:46allowing us to use the pub and we're at the Seaview in Skeggy don't forget he has
02:51some good functions on here as well and if you want to see the Pearly King and
02:55Queen they're probably always in here you know you've got to remember these
02:58old songs like Knees Up Mother Brown they've got to do all these and again
03:03final words from our Air Ambulance. Well yes I'd just like to thank Pearly King and Queen for raising money on behalf of the Air Ambulance we in May 2024 we were celebrating our 30th anniversary and at the end of October 24 they actually attended their 30,000th emergency. We continue to rely
03:33on public funding and donations because we received no other money anywhere and this
03:39financial year we're looking to raise 13 million for this vital life-saving charity to remain
03:49offering a 24-7 service so thank you very much. Just one thing I'd like to make people aware of
03:59just give us an idea one flight how much it actually cost to put one flight up to
04:07save somebody's life? Well last year they attended 1771 emergencies this year it's
04:14about the same figure but each time the helicopter lifts off the ground that's a
04:18cost of almost four thousand five hundred pounds and if any of the three
04:23critical care cars out that is an average cost of about two thousand two
04:28hundred pounds and this year was a big step forward sadly because the third
04:35critical care car is now based in Nottingham 24-7 because of the knife
04:41crime. So there you have it if you think you can help you know drop them a line
04:46if you're having an event and you decide you want to have a stall or sell
04:50something for them to try and raise funds I'm sure they'll never say no to you.
