00:00An ordinance that would have allowed West Lafayette homeowners to build rental units
00:04onto their existing single-family homes was tabled last night, to be heard again in two
00:09months at the council's regular meeting in March.
00:12The delay passed 7-1, with councillors in favor of tabling the vote explaining they
00:16felt they needed more time to hear from residents before making a change to city code.
00:21Those in attendance voiced both support and concern with the idea, with many especially
00:25worried about what this means for the new Chauncey neighborhood.
00:28We are putting pressure on an already strained neighborhood system, street parking options,
00:32and citizen sanity.
00:34This ordinance isn't a long-term strategic solution to a housing problem.
00:37What was the stated goal again?
00:39Others also voiced their feelings that Purdue University needs to do more to provide student
00:44housing for their growing student population, while others still praised the idea as a progressive
00:50and creative solution to the city's affordable housing shortage.
00:53Over the next two months, the city council will be finding ways to reach out to residents,
00:57and they hope that residents reach out to them as well, no matter where they stand.
01:01Oftentimes only the individuals who are opposed to an issue come out and speak against it,
01:06and so really making sure we get that full understanding.
01:09So whether that's emailing, calling, texting, or showing up to one of the forums that we'll
01:13hopefully organize over the next month or two.
