01:00Today is the 8th day of Saptak.
01:02On the 8th day, Ashwini B.J. Deshpande will be presenting vocals.
01:09Ashwini ji, first of all, welcome to ETB Bharat.
01:13Thank you very much.
01:15Now, in classical music, there is a trend of vocals.
01:20So, what has been the tradition of vocals in Indian classical music?
01:23Yes, the tradition of vocals has been going on since ancient times.
01:30Earlier, it was said that the music that touches you the most is Kanta music.
01:39Then comes instrumental, where you get the beauty of tonal variation.
01:45And then comes percussion.
01:47But today, all three are on the same level.
01:50Ashwini ji, which gharana do you belong to and what will you perform today?
01:56My gharana is called Jaipuratravali.
02:02And I would say that gharana is a style of singing.
02:08The students who have learnt from different gurus follow their gurus.
02:14Some work on the sur, some on laya, some both.
02:23So, when you listen to a student, you will know who his guru was.
02:28So, that is gharana.
02:30So, basically, it is a style.
02:32And this is prevalent in kanta music.
02:37Similarly, it is prevalent in tabla as well.
02:41We have all heard that there is Punjab gharana, Delhi gharana, tabla gharana.
02:46There are different gharanas.
02:48Similarly, in kanta music, apart from Jaipuratravali, there is Kheerana, Gwalior, Agra gharana, Rampur Sahasran.
02:56There are many gharanas.
02:58So, there are stylistic differences.
03:00In vocal music, which words do you sing?
03:06This is a traditional thing.
03:09In kanta music, we have words.
03:17In instrumental music, there are no words.
03:20There is no poetry.
03:22So, our poetry will be very small.
03:25It will have a distance of one line and a distance of one and a half lines.
03:30But, in that small poem, the germ that has been mentioned, the feeling that has been mentioned,
03:36we will move it forward through raag.
03:41So, there, once we have taken the poem and entered the realm of raag,
03:47then we leave the strong feeling of raag behind and go into the abstract.
03:54And, purely by giving importance to the raag, we go into the abstract.
04:08So, the importance of words is there, but we have to leave it behind.
04:16What is the importance of vocal music in today's film and disco music?
04:26This music has been around for a long time and will continue to be.
04:31Good music is good music.
04:34Bollywood music, khyal music, dhrupad, thumri, all these are labels that we have given to it.
04:44Music is music.
04:46Music can be good or bad.
04:48So, in good music, the importance of both the sura and laya is there.
04:55And, in bad music, the importance of both is not there.
