2024 was a stellar year for horror, but looks like 2025 is shaping up to be even better! Here are our predictions for the horror films likely to knock your socks off!
Transcript
00:00What's up everybody, Griffey here.
00:02Horror sequels often take the smash mouth approach to things.
00:05They start coming and they don't stop coming.
00:07As a result, a lot of them might get lost in the noise.
00:10Here are five upcoming horror sequels we here at SlashFilm are looking forward to.
00:15Wait, sit here.
00:17Auntie, what's going on?
00:19Jimmy, sit still. Keep quiet and do not move from this spot.
00:22This might be my most anticipated horror movie of all of 2025.
00:27Danny Boyle and Alex Garland back with our journey through the rage virus infested zombie apocalypse.
00:33This movie has an all-star cast, right?
00:35Cillian Murphy's coming back.
00:37Ralph Fiennes, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer.
00:40We are going to travel now over decades.
00:43From watching the very first 28 Days Later, which is shot on many DV tapes,
00:47to what looks like a big, polished production.
00:50It's as if we are watching the talent behind and on screen actually grow.
00:54What we know so far is that this movie takes place 30 years after the beginning of the rage virus.
01:00We will follow a group of survivors on an island that venture back to the mainland
01:05and are subject to all the horrors that the rage virus has wrought upon society.
01:10How does a government react to something like the rage virus?
01:14Probably not well.
01:15How do people behave when the rage virus starts murdering all of their friends and family?
01:20Probably not well.
01:22So the idea that in 30 years, what have these people seen?
01:26What have they suffered?
01:28What does that new dystopian society look like?
01:31Watching the human fabric inside break down and we turn on each other becoming monsters?
01:36That's what the best zombie movies are made of.
01:39I have no doubt this will be one of the best horror movies of 2025.
01:44Predator is one of the most formative movies of my entire life.
01:48I actually really liked Prey as well, right?
01:50The movie that came directly to Hulu.
01:52It set up this really fun tool that the franchise could use moving forward.
01:56All you have to do is put a predator in a different historical era fighting the most awesome warriors
02:02from whatever time, whatever culture, with whatever weapons you want.
02:06We've got a predator fighting a samurai.
02:08We've got a predator going back to Germany and slaughtering Nazis.
02:11As a man who knows Highlander is the greatest movie of all time,
02:14I absolutely dug that idea.
02:16And Dan Trachtenberg says, no, no, no, no.
02:20We're going to do a buddy cop movie.
02:22This Predator movie is supposedly going to be set in the future
02:25and will feature Elle Fanning playing sisters with, I'm sure, a dark secret.
02:30The weirdest thing about Predator is that it's not a zombie movie.
02:35The weirdest thing that has me so excited for this movie is that Dan Trachtenberg said,
02:40we're going to follow this predator on a journey, a heartfelt journey through a wasteland?
02:45Is it even a predator if it's not killing and maiming anymore?
02:48This I am very interested in.
02:50I have no idea how that works.
02:52It seems off the top of my head to be a not great idea,
02:56but I am absolutely intrigued and will be at the theater day one to watch it.
03:02Megan Ticktock danced in the theaters and absolutely won the hearts of all horror movie fans.
03:07I can't even do it. I'm too overweight.
03:09Something like that.
03:10She's this generation's Chucky, right?
03:12A child's toy who becomes a murderous madman.
03:15Now she knows that the child she protected had a hand in destroying her.
03:19So what does Megan come back with now?
03:21What is Megan's prime directive now?
03:24I'm guessing to watch a horror movie.
03:27What is Megan's prime directive now?
03:30I'm guessing to murder the family that betrayed her.
03:33We have almost no details.
03:35We know that Gemma, the engineer who created Megan, will be back.
03:38Her niece, Katie, will be back.
03:40And that Megan, who did not make it through the first one, will be back, right?
03:45We live in a world of rampant technology.
03:47There is no end to how Megan can return to our world, right?
03:51Megan could have made copies of herself on the internet.
03:54She could take over your refrigerator that now for no reason has an iPad on it.
03:57She could come back full Mega Man.
03:59She could be assimilating armor from everywhere.
04:02I don't know.
04:03As long as Megan comes back, kills human beings,
04:06and has awesome new TikTok moves loaded into her programming,
04:09I will absolutely be there.
04:12This is one of the most fun horror movies we've had in recent years.
04:15There's no reason to expect this sequel will not be the same.
04:19The Black Phone started as a Joe Hill short story,
04:26turned into a feature film,
04:28and now looks like it's on its way to becoming a franchise.
04:31But there's one huge problem.
04:33We killed the bad guy at the end of Part 1, right?
04:36So what does that leave for the sequel?
04:39We have very little details except for that creative team,
04:42Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, will be returning for this movie.
04:46So that lets you know immediately you are in good hands, right?
04:49I have full confidence that they will figure out how to answer the question,
04:53how do you make the Black Phone 2 without the grabber?
04:57Well, the short answer is, we'll have the grabber back.
05:00But this leads to infinite amounts of fun possibilities.
05:04To me, the Black Phone lends itself perfectly to a supernatural answer.
05:08The very titular device of the Black Phone, right?
05:11Ghost kids can call this boy and let him know what's coming, help him out.
05:15The fact that his sister is imbued with psychic powers,
05:18it's not a large leap to go from that to somehow resurrecting,
05:22bringing back as a ghost, to get the grabber back into this world, right?
05:27And to me, that seems like it lends itself to more fun possibilities
05:30than just doing a prequel where the grabber's still alive,
05:33even though we know how that story ends, right?
05:36But to be fair, the Black Phone was so awesome.
05:39As long as we get Ethan Hawke back as the grabber,
05:41as long as we have Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill back,
05:44I have no doubt this movie will deliver the exact same magic that that first one did.
05:50In death, there are no accidents, no coincidences, no mishaps, and no escapes.
05:59I can't wait for the sixth entry of this film franchise.
06:03It's long been a favorite of mine for its clever and insane death scenes.
06:07It is one of the greatest achievements of a horror movie,
06:10is that you can traumatize our entire species for all time.
06:13The same way that no one goes in the ocean and doesn't hear in their head the Jaws song
06:17and fear they're going to get eaten, Final Destination did too.
06:21No one I know will ever drive behind a truck carrying any long cylindrical potential murder weapons.
06:27We haven't had a Final Destination movie since 2011.
06:31What sounds really fun about this movie is it seemingly is taking a new and novel approach to the franchise.
06:37What we do know is that the story will center around a young woman on her way to college
06:41and has dream visions of a burning tower in the 60s.
06:46Her grandma was supposed to be in that fiery tragedy, but escaped.
06:50And for 50 years has evaded death while creating apparently multiple bloodlines
06:57that now are going to pay that tab in full, right?
07:00In the other movies, the kids who evade death get got real quick, right?
07:04How has grandma survived for 50 or 60 years
07:08and been able to breed out of control making these rampant bloodlines
07:12that now death is coming to prune?
07:14I can't wait to see how they explain that.
07:17Another reason I'm very excited for this film
07:20is this will be one of the last times we get horror legend Tony Todd on screen
07:25reprising his character of Bloodworth.
07:27Tony Todd is a towering figure in the horror community.
07:31Best known for Candyman, he had a voice and a swagger and a kindness
07:36when people met him at conventions, you never hear anyone say a bad word about Tony Todd.
07:41So getting to see him one more time in what is hopefully a wonderful horror sequel
07:46will be something that I cherish myself and am looking forward to.
07:50So there you have it, 2025 looks to be another great year for horror.
07:55We'll see you at the movies.
