00:00Were you able to decipher who the monster was in the first season of Wednesday before
00:04the big reveal?
00:05If not, let's take a look at the clues that might have slipped past you.
00:09Tim Burton's Wednesday is packed to the brim with suspicious characters, its titular character
00:14most definitely included.
00:16Holy crap!
00:18Do you make a habit of scaring the hell out of people?
00:22It's more of a hobby.
00:23Wednesday Adams, played by Jenna Ortega, is attending a school for outcasts with supernatural
00:28abilities, but the true danger is outside the academy walls.
00:32A mysterious monster is attacking the townspeople, but when Wednesday crosses its path, it doesn't
00:37hurt her.
00:38She takes it upon herself to discover exactly what — or who — this monster is.
00:43The monster's identity is revealed in the penultimate episode, but there were lots of
00:47hints along the way.
00:49Wednesday's first encounter with the monster is in the first episode, when she runs into
00:52the forest after another Nevermore student, Rowan.
00:55The boy tries to kill her, but she is miraculously saved by the monster, who kills Rowan and
01:00leaves Wednesday alive.
01:02Wednesday later points out that Xavier saw her disappear into the forest, but one other
01:06person saw exactly where she ran off to — Tyler.
01:09Tyler seems unsuspecting at first.
01:11He's a normie attending the local public high school, works at a coffee shop, and his dad
01:15is the town sheriff.
01:16I'm gonna keep my eye on you.
01:20Okay.
01:22He's incredibly eager to help Wednesday, seemingly because he has a crush on her, but his cracks
01:26start to show in Episode 2, when he reveals that he's been issued court-ordered therapy.
01:31For anyone else, this would be a red flag, but Wednesday has also seen her therapist
01:35involuntarily.
01:37Because Wednesday is drawn to the macabre, she ignores the signs that are right in front
01:40of her.
01:41While attending anger management classes is relatively common and should not be stigmatized,
01:46Tyler gives plenty of other red flags before the big reveal at the end of Wednesday.
01:50He sinks into the bathtub and screams underwater in Episode 3, suggesting that he has a concealed
01:55rage boiling under the surface, or an inability to regulate his emotions.
02:00Xavier more or less confirms this when he tells Wednesday that Tyler attacked him, but
02:04a violent outburst only makes Wednesday feel that she has more in common with him.
02:08Wednesday ignores a lot of hints about Tyler's secret identity because of her own quirks.
02:12She even catches Tyler following his dad on a monster hunt with coffee grounds in his
02:16pocket to throw off his dog's scent.
02:19She doesn't question it, because it's exactly what she would do, out of morbid curiosity.
02:24Tyler discourages Wednesday from going to the old Pilgrim Meeting House in Episode 3
02:28and offers to take her there himself.
02:30She goes by herself because Tyler has to work for a while, but right after telling Tyler
02:34where she'll be, the monster shows up.
02:37Tyler isn't the only one who gives himself away.
02:39When the sheriff develops a picture of the hide at the end of Episode 3, he is not shocked
02:43by the image of the monster.
02:45He knows it well.
02:46He recognizes what the hide looks like because his wife was a hide.
02:50From that moment on, he realizes that his son is behind the latest batch of murders
02:53he is investigating.
02:55Tyler actually hints at his mother's true identity in Episode 4.
02:59While he waits for Wednesday to get ready for the Raven Dance, he looks into the trophy
03:02case at a photo of the fencing team, which includes his deceased mother, who attended
03:07Nevermore as a hide.
03:08Ms. Thornhill is less obvious about being the hide's master than Tyler is about being
03:12the hide, which is why her identity is the ultimate mystery that Wednesday spends the
03:16finale episode unraveling.
03:18Ms. Thornhill is also a normie, like Tyler, which makes her unassuming.
03:22She has a greenhouse of carnivorous plants and says that,
03:25"...the most interesting plants grow in the shade," suggesting that she is more intrigued
03:29by the darker sides of things.
03:31Since Wednesday and many of the other students at Nevermore have a similar penchant for the
03:35macabre, it's easy for Ms. Thornhill's more questionable qualities to go unnoticed.
03:40Another clue lies in Thornhill's casting.
03:42Thornhill is played by Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday as a child in The Addams
03:46Family and Addams Family Values.
03:48Thornhill definitely has a darker side that she doesn't let on at first.
03:51She tells Wednesday that they are a lot alike, which is an obvious wink at Ricci's old role,
03:56but Wednesday doesn't believe her.
03:58Ricci's character could never be boring.
04:00Like Wednesday, she has a nefarious side.
04:03Probably the most obvious clue about the hide's identity comes in Episode 6 of Wednesday.
04:08Tyler takes Wednesday to the Gates house, and she figures out that the hide is meeting
04:11its master there, and that the master is the long-lost daughter of the Gates family.
04:16Wednesday's parents are responsible for the death of her brother, so this long-lost daughter
04:20is easily believed to be targeting Wednesday.
04:23Tyler quickly disappears into the house, and, soon after, the monster turns up out of nowhere.
04:28When the girls escape the house and lose the monster's trail, Wednesday turns back for
04:39Tyler and finds him immediately.
04:41He scratches himself to make it seem like he also encountered the monster, but he and
04:45the monster are never seen together.
04:47Wednesday discovers that the monster she's encountered is a hide in the penultimate episode.
04:51She finds a diary that profiles the monster and shows it to Tyler.
04:55Later that same day, Tyler takes her on a date and distracts her, while Ms. Thornhill
04:59ransacks her room and steals the diary.
05:01This is the last clue that Tyler leaves before Wednesday discovers his identity through a
05:05vision after sharing a kiss.
05:07In any other series, Tyler would have been the obvious villain from the very beginning,
05:12but in Wednesday, the dark and mysterious are made normal and fun.
05:15That makes it much more difficult to tell the heroes from the villains, but it also
05:19makes the show a lot more interesting.
