00:00Emergency services have resumed their second full day of searching at Granites Beach near
00:07Streaky Bay this morning.
00:0928-year-old Lance Appleby was surfing here on Thursday night when it's believed he was
00:15taken by a great white shark.
00:17A surfboard has been recovered so far in the search, but there's been no sign of the 28-year-old's
00:23body.
00:24Mr Appleby was a well-known figure in the Streaky Bay surfing community.
00:29Tributes have been pouring in from across the country, including from his sporting clubs
00:34interstate.
00:35One Streaky Bay resident and commercial fisherman, Jeff Schmucker, who knew Mr Appleby since
00:41he was a baby, says he was an experienced surfer and parts of the community are feeling
00:47anger over his death.
00:49Each attack that we've had over the last 10 or 15 years is slowly putting that fear in
00:56everybody and people withdrawing from the past time on the West Coast, although there
01:00seems to be more people surfing, but we've had more visitors, so I think the numbers
01:04are made up by new people coming and experiencing what we experienced as kids.
01:09Mr Schmucker says shark management along the West Coast needs to be revisited in the wake
01:14of the death, but he says culling is not the answer, instead suggesting monitoring and
01:20tagging needs to be investigated.
01:22Mr Appleby's death is the fourth fatal shark attack in South Australia in the past 20 months.
01:28Another surfer, Todd Jindal, was taken on this same beach in 2023.
01:34His body was never recovered.
